Quick Answer

An online MBA in Project Management is a two-year MBA in which the second year focuses on planning, scheduling, project finance, risk, quality and contracts. Among nine UGC-DEB listed universities we checked on 3 November 2026, Amity (including a Construction Project Management track), Manipal University Jaipur and ARKA JAIN offer a dedicated specialization. Chandigarh University and Sikkim Manipal teach project management as a core subject instead.

Key Highlights

  • A dedicated online MBA project management specialization is listed by only three of the nine universities we checked: Amity University Online, Manipal University Jaipur (MUJ) and ARKA JAIN University.
  • Amity runs two separate pages: an MBA with PMI Certification Pathways, where a PMI offering fee is added to the first semester, and an MBA in Construction Project Management at ₹1,12,300 per semester.
  • MUJ publishes the fullest subject list: eight project electives across semesters three and four, from Project Planning and Scheduling to Contracts Management in Projects.
  • Chandigarh University makes Project Management a core fourth semester subject for every MBA student and bundles CAPM exam preparation, while Sikkim Manipal teaches it as a third semester core subject.
  • An MBA and the PMP are different things: one is a two-year university degree, the other is a professional certification from the Project Management Institute that needs proven project experience.

What is an online MBA in Project Management?

It is a standard two-year MBA delivered online, in which you choose Project Management as your specialization for the second year. The first two semesters cover the same core every MBA student takes: accounting, economics, marketing, finance, HR, statistics and research methods. The project subjects come in semesters three and four.

That means the degree you receive is an MBA from a particular university. The specialization shapes what you study in the second year, and it may appear on your mark sheets, but it does not change the degree itself or its recognition. So two questions decide whether a programme is right for you. Is the university permitted to offer an online MBA for your admission session? And does its project management content actually match the work you do, or want to do?

The first question is settled on the UGC-DEB list, and our guide to checking a UGC approved online MBA shows how to read it. The second question takes up most of this article, because the official pages differ far more than the marketing suggests.

Is it the same as a “master of business administration in project management”?

Yes, in India the phrases “MBA in Project Management”, “MBA project management” and “master of business administration in project management” describe the same thing: an MBA with a project management specialization. There is no separate degree called a project management MBA in the 2014 UGC Specification of Degrees list. The specialization sits inside the MBA, which is a two-year master’s degree under that notification.

A “masters in project management” from a foreign university is a different qualification altogether, often an MSc. If that is what you are comparing, check how the awarding institution and the online mode are treated in India before you pay anything.

Which universities offer an online MBA in Project Management?

Three of the nine universities we checked list a dedicated Project Management specialization in their online MBA, and Amity offers two versions. Two more teach project management as a compulsory core subject without a specialization. The table below is taken from each university’s official page on 3 November 2026.

Why does it matter whether project management is a specialization or a core subject?

A specialization gives you four to eight project subjects across a full year, and often a project or dissertation in the same area. A core subject gives you one course, usually four credits, that every MBA student takes. If you manage projects for a living, one subject will feel like an introduction. If you mainly want a general MBA with some project grounding, a core subject plus a related specialization such as operations may be enough.

What will you study in a project management specialization?

You will study how projects are selected, planned, scheduled, financed, staffed, controlled and closed, on top of the common MBA core. The detail varies a lot by university, so here is what each official page names.

Manipal University Jaipur

MUJ publishes the most complete list. Its programme page describes the MBA as 90 credits over four semesters and suggests 15 to 20 hours of study a week. You can take Project Management as a single (super) specialization or as one half of a dual specialization. The project electives are:

  • Semester 3: Introduction to Project Management, Project Planning and Scheduling, Project Finance and Budgeting, Managing Human Resources in Projects.
  • Semester 4: Quantitative Methods in Project Management, Project Risk Management, Project Quality Management, Contracts Management in Projects.

Around these sit core subjects such as Strategic Management and a Term Paper in semester three, and International Business Management and a Project in semester four. The first year includes Operation Management, Management Accounting and Data Visualisation using Excel and Tableau, which give you useful groundwork for scheduling and budgeting subjects later.

What stands out is the coverage. Planning, finance, people, quantitative methods, risk, quality and contracts each get a named subject. That is close to a complete project lifecycle.

Amity University Online: MBA with PMI Certification Pathways

Amity’s page for an online MBA in project management carries the heading “MBA with PMI® Certification Pathways”. The curriculum shows Strategic Management, Professional Ethics, a Minor Project and four specialization electives in semester three, then Digital Marketing, Management in Action, a Major Project, AI Tools and Applications and two specialization electives in semester four. The specialization electives are shown only as placeholders such as “Specialization Elective 1”; the page does not name them.

What the page does describe in detail is the PMI component. It lists PMI Student Membership, an exam voucher for an eligible PMI certification exam, contact hours of project management training (PDUs) and access to the PMI Job Board. It names three pathways: PMP, CAPM and PMI-CPMAI. The page also states that for the PMP pathway, three years of relevant experience in managing projects is required. Ask Amity for the named elective subjects before you enrol, because without them you cannot compare its project content with MUJ’s.

Amity University Online: MBA in Construction Project Management

This is the most specialised option in this comparison, and it has its own eligibility. The page lists these subjects:

  • Semester 3: Project Planning and Monitoring, Pre project Planning and Feasibility Analysis, Project Controls and Risk Management, Procurement, Tendering and Contracts, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Allied Technologies.
  • Semester 4: Project Quality, Health and Safety Management, Lean Construction Practices, Dispute, Claims and Change Management.

These sit alongside the same core subjects as Amity’s other MBAs, including a Minor Project, a Major Project and AI Tools and Applications. The page also mentions a 6 to 8 week internship for eligible learners in India after the third semester, and an association with the RICS School of Built Environment.

Eligibility needs care. One section asks for a bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, planning or a related field with at least 40% marks; another asks for graduation in a related field with at least 50%; and an FAQ says any graduate can apply. We read all three on the same page on 3 November 2026. Get the rule that applies to your degree in writing before you pay the registration fee.

ARKA JAIN University

ARKA JAIN lists Project Management among seven MBA specializations: Marketing, Finance, Human Resource Management, Data Analytics and AI, Operations and Supply Chain Management, Project Management and Healthcare Management. Its page publishes syllabus detail for HR, Finance and Marketing only, so you will need to ask for the project management subjects.

One more check applies here. ARKA JAIN appears on the UGC-DEB 2026-27 recognised list with an MBA (General). Ask the university to show you how the Project Management specialization sits within that listed MBA, and how it will be named on your mark sheets.

Chandigarh University

CU does not offer a Project Management specialization. Instead, “Project Management” is a four-credit core subject in semester four for every online MBA student, alongside AI for Managers, two specialization electives and a specialization-based capstone project. CU’s page also describes CAPM preparation within the MBA: 23 hours of instructor-led training delivered through a PMI Authorized Training Partner, courseware, and a one-year PMI student membership. Its Finance track adds a subject called Project Finance and Financial Modeling.

So CU gives every MBA student a single project subject plus preparation for PMI’s entry-level certification. If you want a full year of project subjects, CU is not that. If you want a general or finance MBA with a recognised project credential on the side, it may suit you.

Sikkim Manipal University

SMU teaches Project Management as a core subject in semester three, next to Business Strategy, and then asks you to pick specializations such as Marketing, Finance, HRM, Systems, Operations and Supply Chain Management, or Healthcare. There is no project management specialization, but every SMU MBA student gets the core subject.

How much does an online MBA in Project Management cost?

Fees run from about ₹1 lakh at ARKA JAIN to over ₹4 lakh for Amity’s construction track, based on the official pages on 3 November 2026. At MUJ and ARKA JAIN the specialization does not change the standard MBA fee. Amity charges more for both of its project-focused versions.

University and programmeFee shown on the official pageNotes
ARKA JAIN University, MBA (Project Management among its specializations)₹25,000 per semesterRegistration ₹2,500 at application; exam fee ₹3,000 per year
Manipal University Jaipur, MBA in Project Management₹46,000 per semester; ₹1,84,000 course feeNo-cost EMI available; scholarship of up to 20% for various categories. An early-bird discount on the page had a last date of 3 November 2026, so it will have lapsed by the time you read this
Chandigarh University, MBA (core Project Management subject, CAPM preparation)Two fee options: ₹2,38,000 (three value-added certificates) or ₹2,33,500 (one value-added certificate)Early-bird scholarships brought them to ₹1,90,400 (20%) and ₹1,75,125 (25%); ask which option includes the PMI component
Sikkim Manipal University, MBA (core Project Management subject)₹30,000 per semester; ₹1,20,000 totalNo-cost EMI available
Amity University Online, MBA with PMI Certification Pathways₹86,300 for semester 1, then ₹56,300 per semesterOne-time payment ₹2,37,000; annual ₹1,36,880 in year 1 and ₹1,06,880 in year 2; no-cost EMI ₹10,156 a month for 24 months. The page says the fee varies with the PMI offering selected, which is added to the first semester fee
Amity University Online, MBA in Construction Project Management₹1,12,300 per semesterOne-time ₹4,13,000; annual ₹2,13,000; no-cost EMI ₹17,750 a month for 24 months

Two points from our calculation. First, Amity’s semester one fee for the PMI pathway version is ₹30,000 higher than its ₹56,300 standard semester fee, which matches the page’s note that the PMI offering is added to semester one. Ask Amity what exactly that amount buys, and whether the exam voucher covers the PMP or only the CAPM. Second, Amity’s construction track costs roughly twice its standard MBA (₹1,12,300 against ₹56,300 per semester).

If you are looking for an affordable online MBA project management option, ARKA JAIN and MUJ are the lower-fee dedicated specializations in this comparison. Fees, scholarships and early-bird offers change often, so treat every figure here as a snapshot and ask for the current fee schedule in writing. Our wider comparison of online MBA fees covers every partner’s extras, exam fees and payment plans.

How is an MBA in Project Management different from the PMP certification?

An MBA is a two-year university degree that teaches the whole of management, with project management as one specialization. The PMP (Project Management Professional) is a professional certification awarded by the Project Management Institute (PMI), a global professional body, to people who meet its education and project experience requirements and pass its exam. One is a degree; the other is a credential about your project practice.

We could not open PMI’s official certification pages when we checked on 3 November 2026, so we describe the PMP in general terms only. For current eligibility, exam format, fees and renewal rules, go to pmi.org directly before you plan around it.

Does an online MBA make you PMP certified?

No. None of the official pages we read says the MBA itself awards the PMP. What some MBAs do is help you along the way. Amity’s PMI pathway version lists PMI membership, contact hours of training and an exam voucher, and states that its PMP pathway needs three years of experience in managing projects. CU prepares students for the CAPM, which is PMI’s associate-level certification. In both cases you still sit PMI’s exam and meet PMI’s own rules.

That distinction matters when you compare offers. An MBA that “includes PMI” may include membership, training hours or a voucher, not the certification. Ask exactly which PMI items are included, who delivers the training, and what happens if you do not yet meet the PMP experience requirement by the end of the course. For a wider view of how degrees and certificates differ, see our explainer on the online MBA certificate compared with the full degree.

Should you choose the MBA, the PMP or both?

Choose by the gap in your profile. If you lack a management degree, the MBA fills that gap; if you already manage projects and need proof of method, the PMP fills that one. Many working professionals end up with both, usually in sequence.

Your situationWhat usually fitsWhy
Graduate with little or no work experience, interested in project rolesOnline MBA with a project specialization; consider CAPM laterYou can start the MBA without project experience; PMI’s experience-based certification comes later
Engineer or site professional in construction or infrastructureAmity’s Construction Project Management MBA, or MUJ’s specializationSubjects on tendering, contracts, BIM, safety or project finance match site and contract work
IT or operations professional already running projects, no MBAMBA first if you want a general management role; PMP if you want to stay a specialist project managerThe MBA widens your remit across finance, people and strategy; the PMP signals project method
Experienced project manager with an MBA alreadyPMP, not a second MBAThe certification adds what the degree does not
Manager with 10 or more years of experience wanting senior leadershipConsider an executive MBA format, then decide on PMPExecutive formats are built around senior experience

If you are in that last group, our guide to the online executive MBA explains who those programmes suit and what eligibility they ask for.

Can you do both at the same time?

You can, and some universities design for it. Amity’s pathway and CU’s CAPM preparation both run inside the MBA. The practical limits are time and experience. MUJ’s page suggests 15 to 20 hours of MBA study a week, so adding certification exam preparation on top of a full-time job is a real load. And if you do not yet have the project experience PMI asks for, the PMP has to wait regardless.

Project Management or Operations Management: which specialization should you pick?

Pick Project Management if your work comes in time-bound pieces with a start, a budget and an end: building a plant, launching a system, delivering a contract. Pick Operations Management if your work is about running a continuing process well: production, service delivery, quality and capacity day after day.

The two overlap. MUJ’s operations electives include Introduction to Project Management alongside Advanced Production and Operations Management and Total Quality Management, and ARKA JAIN lists Operations and Supply Chain Management next to Project Management. If you cannot decide, MUJ lets you take a dual specialization, so Project Management plus Operations Management is one possible pairing; confirm the allowed combinations with the university. Our guide to the online MBA operations management specialization compares those subjects across universities.

What about a distance MBA in project management?

A distance (ODL) MBA is a different mode from an online MBA, with its own UGC-DEB list and its own rules on where exams and study centres can be. Some universities offer a project management specialization in distance mode, but none of the nine online partners compared here does so under that name. If you are weighing distance education against online learning, our comparison of the online MBA vs distance MBA sets out the differences that actually affect you, and the same verification rule applies: check the university and programme on the correct DEB list for your session.

What roles does a project management specialization prepare you for?

It prepares you for roles where you plan, coordinate, control or report on projects and project portfolios. We do not quote salary or placement figures, because no official dataset covers online MBA graduates in this specialization. Job titles that the universities themselves list include:

  • On MUJ’s page: Project Manager, Portfolio Manager, Agile Project Manager, Project Risk Manager, Project Scheduler, Project Coordinator and Contract Manager.
  • On Amity’s PMI pathway page: Project Coordinator, Project Analyst, PMO Analyst and Junior Project Manager at entry level, moving to Project Manager, Program Manager and PMO Manager, and later Program Director, Portfolio Manager and PMO Director.
  • On Amity’s construction page: roles such as Planning or Scheduling Engineer, Quantity Surveyor (Trainee), Contracts and Procurement Manager, BIM Manager and Construction Manager.

Here is what the most common titles involve, in neutral terms:

RoleWhat the work usually involves
Project CoordinatorTracking tasks, updating schedules, organising meetings and documentation for a project manager
Project Scheduler or Planning EngineerBuilding and updating the project schedule, tracking progress against plan and flagging delays
Project ManagerOwning scope, time, cost, quality and stakeholder communication for one or more projects
PMO Analyst or PMO ManagerRunning the project management office: standards, reporting and portfolio data across many projects
Contracts or Procurement ManagerTendering, vendor selection, contract terms, claims and changes
Program or Portfolio ManagerManaging a group of related projects and choosing which projects get funded

Treat these titles as directions, not promises. Universities list them to show where the subjects point. What you can move into depends on your existing experience, your industry and the employers around you. A site engineer with five years of experience is far better placed to step into a project manager role after this MBA than a fresh graduate is.

Who should choose an online MBA in Project Management?

It suits you if projects are already part of your work, or you want them to be, and you also want the wider management grounding of an MBA. It suits you less if your interest is purely in passing a certification exam.

People who tend to benefit most:

  • Engineers and technical staff who are being given project responsibility and want the finance, contracts and people side.
  • Construction, infrastructure and real estate professionals, especially for Amity’s construction track.
  • IT professionals moving from delivery roles into project or programme coordination.
  • Operations staff who run improvement projects and want a structured method.
  • Family business members managing expansions, plant set-ups or large orders.

Most people in these groups are working full time. Our guide to the online MBA for working professionals covers eligibility, exam formats and how to plan study around a job.

How do you judge the best online MBA project management option for you?

There is no single best programme; the best one is the one whose subjects you will use and whose listing you have verified. A simple way to score your shortlist:

  1. Write down the project subjects each university names for semesters three and four.
  2. Mark which of these areas each covers: planning and scheduling, project finance, risk, quality, contracts and procurement, people.
  3. Check whether there is a project or dissertation you could base on a real project at work.
  4. Ask which tools are taught, if any, and whether you need your own software licences.
  5. Ask whether any PMI element is included, and exactly what it is: membership, training hours, a voucher or nothing.

On the published lists, MUJ covers all six areas, and Amity’s construction track covers most of them for a construction setting. Amity’s PMI pathway version and ARKA JAIN need their full syllabus before you can score them fairly.

What should you check before you enrol?

Check the university’s UGC-DEB listing first, then the specialization detail, then the money.

  1. UGC-DEB status. Amity University Uttar Pradesh, MUJ, SMU, LPU, CU, NMIMS and UPES appear on the 2026-27 entitled list with an MBA. ARKA JAIN appears on the 2026-27 recognised list with an MBA (General); ask how its Project Management specialization relates to that listing.
  2. Specialization name on documents. Ask how “Project Management” or “Construction Project Management” will appear on your mark sheets.
  3. Full syllabus. Especially for Amity’s PMI pathway version and ARKA JAIN, where elective names are not published.
  4. Eligibility for your exact degree. Amity’s construction track lists different minimum marks and degree requirements in different sections of its page.
  5. PMI components. Membership, training hours, voucher, which exam, and what happens if you are not yet eligible for the PMP.
  6. Total cost in writing. Registration, exam, resit and any PMI add-on fees, and whether a scholarship applies to all four semesters.
  7. Exam format and admission steps. Our online MBA admission guide covers the DEB-ID, ABC ID and document checks.

If a page promises outcomes that sound certain, such as guaranteed project manager jobs, ask for the evidence before you let it influence your choice.

Do you need an engineering degree for this specialization?

No, not for most programmes here. MUJ, CU and ARKA JAIN accept a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, subject to their minimum marks. Amity’s construction track is the exception: parts of its page ask for an engineering, architecture, planning or related degree, while its FAQ says any graduate can apply, so confirm in writing. Amity’s PMI pathway version accepts any graduate with at least 40% marks, with an admission test below that, and says its PMP pathway needs three years of relevant project experience.

If you have no technical background, you will still cope with planning, finance and contracts subjects. Quantitative subjects such as MUJ’s Quantitative Methods in Project Management take more effort if your statistics are rusty, so use the first-year statistics subject to build that base.

How GetOnlineDegree.in Helps

We compare online MBA programmes from UGC-DEB listed universities using their official pages, so you can see the subject lists, fees and eligibility rules side by side. For project management in particular, we can help you check which universities have a dedicated specialization rather than a single core subject, request syllabus details that are not on the public pages, ask what any PMI component really includes, and confirm the DEB listing for your admission session. The decision stays with you; our job is to make sure it rests on official information.

Conclusion

An online MBA in Project Management is a standard two-year MBA with a project-focused second year, but only a few universities offer it as a true specialization. Among the nine we checked, MUJ publishes the fullest list of project subjects, Amity offers a PMI pathway version and a separate construction track at a higher fee, and ARKA JAIN lists the specialization at the lowest fee without publishing its subjects. CU and SMU teach project management as one core subject, and CU adds CAPM preparation.

Remember that the MBA and the PMP answer different needs. The degree builds general management depth; the certification proves project method and needs experience. Decide which gap you are filling, verify the university’s UGC-DEB listing, and get the syllabus and fee schedule in writing before you pay.

FAQs

Which universities offer an online MBA in Project Management in India?

On 3 November 2026, Amity University Online (a PMI pathway version and a Construction Project Management track), Manipal University Jaipur and ARKA JAIN University listed a dedicated Project Management specialization in their online MBA. Chandigarh University and Sikkim Manipal University teach Project Management as a core subject only. LPU, UPES, GLA and NMIMS did not list it as an MBA specialization.

Is an MBA in Project Management better than PMP?

Neither is better in general, because they do different jobs. The MBA is a two-year degree covering all of management, with project subjects in the second year. The PMP is a professional certification from PMI that needs project experience and an exam. Choose the MBA if you lack a management degree, and the PMP if you already manage projects and want proof of method.

Can a fresher do an online MBA in Project Management?

Yes. MUJ, ARKA JAIN and Amity’s PMI pathway version ask for a bachelor’s degree with minimum marks, not work experience. You will find the subjects easier with some project exposure, though, and PMI’s experience-based PMP certification will have to wait until you have the required project experience. Check each university’s marks rule before applying.

What subjects are covered in an online MBA project management specialization?

At MUJ, the subjects are Introduction to Project Management, Project Planning and Scheduling, Project Finance and Budgeting, Managing Human Resources in Projects, Quantitative Methods in Project Management, Project Risk Management, Project Quality Management and Contracts Management in Projects. Amity’s construction track adds tendering, BIM, lean construction, safety and claims management.

How much does an online MBA in Project Management cost?

On 3 November 2026, official pages showed ₹25,000 per semester at ARKA JAIN, ₹1,84,000 in total at MUJ, ₹86,300 for the first semester then ₹56,300 per semester for Amity’s PMI pathway version, and ₹1,12,300 per semester for Amity’s construction track. Scholarships and offers change often, so ask for a written fee schedule.
