Quick Answer
An online MBA in Information Technology is a two-year MBA in which the second year focuses on managing technology: IT project management, systems analysis, business intelligence, information security, ERP and, increasingly, AI in business. Amity, NMIMS, LPU, Chandigarh University, GLA and Manipal University Jaipur offer a named IT track online. Fees we checked on 3 November 2026 run from about ₹1 lakh to ₹2.3 lakh.
Key Highlights
- An online MBA in Information Technology is a management degree, not a programming degree: no university we checked asks for a computer science background, and every one accepts a bachelor’s in any discipline.
- The track goes by several names: Information Technology Management (Amity, NMIMS, GLA), Information Technology (LPU, CU), IT and FinTech or Information System Management (MUJ) and Systems (Sikkim Manipal, as a dual specialization).
- NMIMS has the most governance-heavy elective list we found: Cybersecurity, Data Privacy, Security and Governance, and Technology Risk and Compliance Management sit alongside Agile programme management.
- Chandigarh University’s IT electives now include Agentic AI and Intelligent Process Automation, and Data Engineering and MLOps Essentials, the most technical subjects in this comparison.
- ARKA JAIN University has no IT track; its closest option is Data Analytics and AI. UPES offers Digital Business instead, which leans towards e-commerce and digital marketing.
What is an online MBA in Information Technology?
It is a standard two-year MBA, delivered online, in which you choose Information Technology (or IT Management, or Information Systems) as your specialization for the second year. The first year is the common MBA core: accounting, economics, marketing, finance, HR, statistics and research methods. The IT subjects arrive in semesters three and four.
Think of it as an MBA for people who will manage technology rather than build it. You learn how IT projects are planned and controlled, how information systems support business processes, how data turns into decisions, and how security and compliance risks are managed. You do not, in most programmes, write production code.
That distinction answers the most common confusion around the search term “mba in it”. An MBA in IT is a Master of Business Administration. Under the UGC Specification of Degrees, the MBA is a master’s degree with a minimum duration of two years. The specialization does not change that degree name or its standing.
Is “MBA in information systems” the same thing?
Close enough to compare, but not identical. “Information Systems” titles usually put more weight on how data, databases and enterprise systems serve an organisation. “IT Management” titles lean towards running IT functions, projects and vendors. “Systems” is the older name some universities still use. In practice the subject lists overlap heavily, so read the electives rather than the label.
What about “MBA in IT distance education”?
Distance (ODL) and online are two different modes under the UGC’s 2020 regulations. Online programmes are taught and examined through technology-enabled platforms, while ODL relies on self-learning material with examinations held at exam centres. This article covers online programmes. The universities below are partners whose online MBA we could check against the UGC-DEB online list.
Which universities offer an online MBA in IT management?
Six of the nine partner universities we checked offer a named IT specialization in their online MBA, one more lists Systems as a dual specialization, and two point you to a neighbouring track instead. We checked each official programme page on 3 November 2026.
| University | Name of the IT track | Status | Official page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amity University Online | MBA with Specialization in Information Technology Management | Dedicated track | Amity IT Management MBA |
| NMIMS (CDOE) | MBA (Information Technology Management) | Dedicated track | NMIMS IT Management MBA |
| Lovely Professional University | Online MBA in Information Technology | Dedicated track | LPU IT MBA page |
| Chandigarh University | Online MBA in Information Technology (IT) | Dedicated track | CU IT MBA page |
| GLA University | MBA with specialization in Information Technology Management | Dedicated track | GLA IT Management MBA |
| Manipal University Jaipur | Online MBA in IT and FinTech; Online MBA in Information System Management | Two related tracks | MUJ’s programme pages on onlinemanipal.com |
| Sikkim Manipal University | Systems, as part of a dual specialization MBA | Dual specialization option | SMU’s programme page on onlinemanipal.com |
| UPES | MBA with specialisation in Digital Business | No IT track; nearest alternative | UPES Digital Business MBA |
| ARKA JAIN University | Data Analytics and AI | No IT track; nearest alternative | ARKA JAIN online MBA |
A note on the two Manipal universities: the onlinemanipal.com pages did not load for our automated check on 3 November 2026, so we have not reproduced their subject lists here. The track names above come from the titles of their official programme pages. Ask the university for the current syllabus before you decide, and compare the full programme range on our Manipal University Jaipur and Sikkim Manipal University profiles.
What subjects will you study in an online MBA in IT?
Expect four to seven IT subjects in the second year on top of the common MBA core. The common thread is managing technology projects, systems, data and risk, but each university picks a different emphasis. Here is what each official page lists.
Amity University Online
Amity publishes a full semester list. The IT Management subjects are:
- Semester 3: IT Project Management, Business Intelligence and Data Analytics, E Business and Trade, Web Enabled Business Process, System Analysis and Design.
- Semester 4: AI Tools and Applications, Business Process Management, Enterprise Management, Information Security and Risk Management.
Semester three also carries Strategic Management, Professional Ethics and Social Responsibility for Sustainability, and a Minor Project. Semester four includes Digital Marketing as a common subject. This is the most “classic” IT management list in the comparison: projects, systems analysis, business processes and security, with AI added as a single subject. You can see Amity’s other programmes on our Amity University Online profile.
NMIMS
The NMIMS MBA (Information Technology Management) runs over four semesters with seven electives across semesters three and four. The page names these electives:
- Cybersecurity
- Data Privacy, Security and Governance
- Technology Risk and Compliance Management
- Applying Agile Concepts in Program Management
- Digital Product Design and Development
- Business Process Transformation
- AI Concepts and Applications in Business
The core is also worth a look. Business Analytics sits in semester two for every NMIMS MBA student, semester three adds Corporate Finance and Research Methodology, and semester four adds Corporate Sustainability, Indian Ethos and Ethics, International Business and a six-credit Project. The page lists the electives without mapping each one to a semester slot, so ask which four come in semester three.
NMIMS’s list stands out for governance. Three of its seven electives deal with security, privacy, risk and compliance, which suits people heading towards IT governance, audit or risk roles.
Lovely Professional University
LPU’s page does not publish a semester-wise subject list for the IT specialization. It names Database Management Systems, Managing Information Systems and Data Analytics with Python, and mentions cloud computing (IaaS, PaaS and SaaS), cybersecurity tools, IoT applications and networking technologies as topics. It recommends 8 to 10 hours of study a week over two years and four semesters. Ask LPU for the detailed syllabus so you can see the actual subject names and credits. LPU’s wider range is on our LPU Online profile.
Chandigarh University
CU publishes a 108-credit structure with a Harvard ManageMentor component of ten short courses. The IT electives are:
- Semester 3: Business Intelligence, System Analysis and Design, Managing IT-Enabled Services, Knowledge Management.
- Semester 4: Agentic AI and Intelligent Process Automation, Data Engineering and MLOps Essentials.
The page also shows Business Process Re-Engineering and Database Management under a heading labelled “Semester 5 Electives” while tagging them as fourth semester. A two-year MBA has no fifth semester, so ask CU to confirm where these two subjects sit. The semester four core includes Project Management, Values and Ethics, and Academic Research Writing.
CU’s list is the most technical here. Data engineering and MLOps are topics you would normally expect in a data science programme, so if you have no data background, ask how much hands-on work those subjects involve.
GLA University
GLA lists Information Technology Management among its online MBA electives and has a dedicated specialization page, but neither page publishes the subjects inside the track. The specialization page says the programme spans two years in four semesters and that a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university makes you eligible. Ask GLA for the syllabus. More on GLA’s programmes is on our GLA University profile.
Manipal University Jaipur and Sikkim Manipal University
MUJ markets two technology tracks: IT and FinTech, and Information System Management. The first, going by its name, combines IT management with financial technology. The second is the closer match for someone wanting a broad information systems specialization. SMU offers Systems as one half of its dual specialization MBA. Because the official pages did not load for our check, ask each university for the current subject list, credit structure and whether the track can be paired with another specialization.
How the IT curricula compare at a glance
| Topic area | Amity | NMIMS | LPU | CU |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IT project and programme management | IT Project Management | Applying Agile Concepts in Program Management | Not named separately | Project Management (core) |
| Systems analysis and business processes | System Analysis and Design, Business Process Management | Business Process Transformation | Managing Information Systems | System Analysis and Design, Business Process Re-Engineering |
| Data and business intelligence | Business Intelligence and Data Analytics | Business Analytics (core) | Database Management Systems, Data Analytics with Python | Business Intelligence, Database Management, Data Engineering and MLOps Essentials |
| Security, privacy and risk | Information Security and Risk Management | Cybersecurity; Data Privacy, Security and Governance; Technology Risk and Compliance Management | Cybersecurity tools (topic) | Not named separately |
| AI and automation | AI Tools and Applications | AI Concepts and Applications in Business | Not named separately | Agentic AI and Intelligent Process Automation |
| E-business and digital products | E Business and Trade, Web Enabled Business Process | Digital Product Design and Development | IoT and cloud (topics) | Managing IT-Enabled Services |
“Not named separately” means the official page did not list a subject with that focus. The topic may still be taught inside another subject. GLA, MUJ and SMU are left out of this table because we could not see their subject lists.
How much does an online MBA in IT cost?
The IT specialization costs the same as the university’s standard online MBA at most partners, and the range runs from about ₹1 lakh at GLA to over ₹2.3 lakh list price at CU. These are the figures on the official pages when we checked on 3 November 2026.
| University | Fee shown on the official page | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| GLA University | ₹24,250 per semester; ₹97,000 for two years | Exam fee ₹6,000 in full or ₹1,500 per semester; the GLA fee structure page shows registration as ₹500, while the MBA page shows ₹2,000 |
| LPU | ₹50,000 per semester (actual fee) | A 20% Student Grant brought it to ₹40,400 per semester, valid until 7 November 2026; registration ₹1,000, non-refundable |
| NMIMS | ₹55,000 per semester, ₹1,05,000 per year, or ₹1,96,000 paid at once | Admission processing ₹1,200; exam fee ₹800 per subject per attempt; project fee ₹800 per attempt |
| Chandigarh University | ₹2,33,500 programme fee | The page showed a 25% Early Bird Scholarship bringing it to ₹1,75,125 (₹43,781 per semester), with no end date shown; seat booking ₹10,000 |
| Amity University Online | ₹56,300 per semester; ₹2,25,000 in total | One-time payment ₹2,07,000; annual ₹1,06,880; no-cost EMI of ₹8,906 a month for 24 months |
| UPES (Digital Business) | Total not shown on the page | EMI from ₹8,864; ask for the full fee schedule in writing |
| Manipal University Jaipur | ₹46,000 per semester; ₹1,84,000 in total | As checked on our earlier review of the MUJ online MBA page in October 2026; confirm for the IT track |
| Sikkim Manipal University | ₹30,000 per semester; ₹1,20,000 in total | As checked in October 2026 for the dual specialization MBA; confirm for Systems |
| ARKA JAIN (Data Analytics and AI) | ₹25,000 per semester | Registration ₹2,500; exam fee ₹3,000 per year |
A few figures are worth working through. At GLA, the ₹97,000 tuition plus the ₹6,000 full exam fee plus the ₹2,000 registration shown on the MBA page comes to ₹1,05,000 (our calculation), which matches the “₹1,05,000 all inclusive” headline on GLA’s MBA page. If the ₹500 registration on the fee page is the current one, the total would be lower, so ask GLA which figure applies.
At LPU, four semesters at the ₹50,000 actual fee is ₹2,00,000, and four at the discounted ₹40,400 is ₹1,61,600 (our calculation). Whether the grant applies to all four semesters, and whether a later semester could revert to the full fee, is something to confirm in writing. The grant date also falls just after this check, so it may have changed by the time you read this.
At NMIMS, the per-semester route works out to ₹2,20,000 over four semesters against ₹1,96,000 paid upfront, a difference of ₹24,000 (our calculation). NMIMS notes that its fee structure is subject to change at the university’s discretion.

MBA in IT vs MCA vs MBA in Business Analytics: which should you choose?
Choose an MBA in IT if you want to manage technology teams, projects and systems. Choose an MCA if you want to build software and stay on the technical track. Choose an MBA in Business Analytics or Data Science if your work will centre on data, models and decision support.
| Question | MBA in IT | MCA | MBA in Business Analytics or Data Science |
|---|---|---|---|
| What degree do you get? | Master of Business Administration | Master of Computer Applications | Master of Business Administration |
| Minimum duration | Two years (2014 UGC specification) | Two years, after a 2022 UGC notification reduced it from three | Two years |
| Who can apply | Graduates of any discipline at the universities above | Set by each university; check its MCA eligibility page | Graduates of any discipline at most partners |
| Main focus | Managing IT projects, systems, security, vendors and digital change | Programming, software development, databases, networks | Statistics, analytics tools, machine learning for business decisions |
| Coding in the curriculum | Little or none at most universities; some Python or data subjects at LPU and CU | Central | Moderate; tools and some programming |
| Typical next step | IT management, consulting, project and programme roles | Developer, engineer and technical specialist roles | Analyst and analytics management roles |
If you are leaning towards the technical route, our guides to online MCA course fees and online MCA vs distance MCA set out the costs and the mode question.
Several partners run analytics as a separate specialization rather than inside IT. NMIMS lists MBA (Business Analytics) and MBA (Operations and Data Sciences) as separate options. CU has an MBA in Business Analytics and an MBA in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. UPES has an MBA in Business Analytics. ARKA JAIN’s nearest track is Data Analytics and AI.
What about Digital Business, Digital Marketing or Operations?
These sit next to IT but answer different goals. UPES’s Digital Business specialization lists Introduction to Digital Business and Social Media Tools, Digital Business Models and Design Principles, Digital Brand Management, Digital Payments and E-Commerce, and Customer Relationship Management in semester three, with Digital and Business Laws and Digital Marketing in semester four. That is closer to running an online business than to managing an IT function.
If your interest is in the customer-facing side of technology, compare it with an online MBA in digital marketing. If you work on processes, ERP rollouts and supply chains, an online MBA operations management track may fit better. A dual specialization, where the university allows it, is a common way to combine IT with one of these.
Who should choose an online MBA in IT?
It suits people already working in or around technology who want to move into management, and managers in non-IT functions who increasingly own technology decisions. It suits a fresher less well, unless you have a clear plan to enter an IT services or technology company.
People who tend to get the most from it:
- Software developers, testers and support engineers who want to move into team lead, project or delivery roles and need the business vocabulary that goes with them.
- IT administrators and infrastructure staff who now handle budgets, vendors and audits.
- Business analysts and functional consultants working on ERP, CRM or other enterprise systems.
- Operations, finance or HR managers in non-tech companies who lead digital projects in their department.
- Founders and family business members planning to digitise their business.
A simple test: read the semester three and four subject list of the university you prefer and ask whether you would use at least half of those subjects in your work over the next two years. If not, a broader specialization or a different degree may serve you better.
Most of the people choosing this route are already in full-time jobs. Our guide to the online MBA for working professionals covers eligibility, exam formats and planning study around work.
Can you do it without an IT or computer science degree?
Yes. Every university in this comparison accepts a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, and the IT specialization does not add a subject requirement on the pages we checked. The minimum marks vary:
| University | Minimum marks at graduation, as on the official page |
|---|---|
| Amity | 40%; below 40% requires an admission test |
| NMIMS | 50%, or 45% for SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates |
| UPES (Digital Business) | 50%, or 45% with at least two years of work experience; CA, CS and ICWA holders eligible |
| Chandigarh University | Bachelor’s in any discipline; CA and ICWA holders also eligible |
| GLA | Bachelor’s in any discipline from a recognised university |
| ARKA JAIN | 50%, or 45% for reserved categories |
If you have never worked with data or systems, expect the more technical subjects to take extra effort. CU’s Data Engineering and MLOps Essentials and LPU’s Data Analytics with Python are where a non-technical learner is most likely to need additional practice.
What roles does an MBA in IT management prepare you for?
It prepares you for roles that sit between business and technology: planning, managing, buying, securing and improving IT, rather than writing code. We do not quote salary or placement figures, because no official dataset covers online MBA graduates in this specialization.
The universities themselves list these roles on their IT pages:
- Amity: IT Business Analyst, IT Project Coordinator, Technology Operations Associate and IT Support Manager at entry level; IT Project Manager, Technology Consultant and IT Operations Manager at mid level; and IT Strategy Manager, Digital Transformation Lead, CIO and CTO at the advanced level.
- GLA: IT Manager, Systems Analyst, Project Manager (IT), IT Consultant, Network Administrator and Technology Operations Manager, with IT Director, CIO, CTO and Head of IT Strategy described as roles that come with experience.
- CU: IT Analyst, Business Analyst, Systems Manager, IT Project Manager, Database Administrator and Technology Consultant.
Read the senior titles as long-term directions rather than outcomes of the degree. What you can realistically move into depends on your experience, your employer and the work you do during the programme. A developer with five years in an IT services firm is far better placed to use this MBA for a move into delivery management than a fresher is to walk into an IT manager role.
Which roles fit which curriculum?
| If your target is… | Look for these subjects | Where we found them |
|---|---|---|
| IT project or delivery management | IT Project Management, Agile programme management, Project Management | Amity, NMIMS, CU |
| IT governance, risk or security management | Cybersecurity, Data Privacy, Technology Risk and Compliance, Information Security | NMIMS, Amity |
| Business analysis and ERP or process work | System Analysis and Design, Business Process Management or Transformation | Amity, CU, NMIMS |
| Data and BI-led roles | Business Intelligence, Database Management, Data Analytics | Amity, CU, LPU |
| AI and automation programmes | AI Tools, AI Concepts in Business, Agentic AI and Process Automation | Amity, NMIMS, CU |
Is an online MBA in IT valid in India?
Yes, if the university is permitted to offer its online MBA for your admission session. The specialization does not affect validity; the university’s UGC-DEB listing does. Regulation 22 of the UGC online regulations treats degrees earned through online mode from recognised institutions as equivalent to conventional degrees.
On the 2026-27 entitled list, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, MUJ, SMU, LPU, CU, NMIMS and UPES appear with an MBA. GLA University’s row on that list (row 115) also includes an MBA. ARKA JAIN appears on the 2026-27 recognised list for an MBA (General), and it does not offer an IT track in any case.
Two more checks matter. Every learner in an online programme needs a DEB-ID, created through the UGC-DEB student portal using your ABC ID. And under Regulation 16(2), the mode of delivery must be printed on the degree and mark sheets, so expect “online” to appear on them. Our guide to checking a UGC approved online MBA explains how to read the lists step by step.
How should you judge an IT management curriculum before enrolling?
Score the second-year subjects against the work you actually want to do, then ask for the detail the public pages leave out. A balanced IT management curriculum for most learners covers five areas: project delivery, systems and processes, data and business intelligence, security and risk, and emerging technology such as AI.
A practical way to compare:
- Write down the semester three and four IT subjects for each university on your shortlist.
- Mark which of the five areas each subject covers, and note any gaps.
- Ask whether the project or dissertation can be based on a real problem at your workplace. NMIMS lists a six-credit Project, and Amity a Minor Project.
- Ask how technical subjects are assessed: case analyses, tool-based assignments, or written exams only.
- Ask whether any software or tools (for example, BI or analytics tools) are provided through the LMS, or whether you need your own licences.
- Check how the exams are run. Under the UGC regulations, online examinations are technology-enabled or proctored, so confirm the device and internet set-up the university expects. Our guide on online MBA admission covers the documents and DEB-ID steps.
On published detail alone, Amity and NMIMS give the clearest picture of a management-focused IT track, CU the most technical one, and LPU, GLA, MUJ and SMU need a syllabus request before you can judge them fairly.
What should you check before paying any fee?
Check the listing, the syllabus and the money, in that order.
- UGC-DEB status. Find the university’s row on the current entitled or recognised list for the session you are joining.
- Exact specialization name. Ask how it will appear on your mark sheets: “Information Technology Management”, “Information Technology”, “Information System Management” and “Systems” are all in use.
- Full syllabus. Especially at LPU, GLA, MUJ and SMU, where we could not see a full subject list.
- Semester placement of electives. NMIMS lists electives without slots, and CU’s page has a labelling error to clear up.
- Total cost in writing. Including registration, exam, project and alumni fees, and whether any grant or scholarship applies to all four semesters.
- Offer dates. LPU’s grant was dated 7 November 2026 and CU’s early bird scholarship showed no end date when we checked. Treat both as a snapshot.
If a page promises outcomes that sound too certain, such as guaranteed CIO roles or fixed salary jumps, ask for the evidence behind the claim before letting it shape your decision.
Want to compare IT tracks side by side? Share your graduation marks, your current role and the kind of technology management work you are aiming for, and an admission advisor can help you shortlist universities whose subjects fit that goal and request their current written fee schedules and syllabi.
How GetOnlineDegree.in Helps
We compare online programmes from UGC-DEB listed partner universities using their official pages, so you can see subject lists, fees and eligibility side by side rather than piecing them together from marketing material. For an IT specialization, we can help you work out which universities have a dedicated track, request the syllabus where it is not published, and confirm the DEB listing for your session. The decision stays with you; our role is to make sure it rests on official information.
Conclusion
An online MBA in Information Technology is a standard two-year MBA with a technology-management second year. Six partner universities offer a named IT track, one offers Systems as a dual specialization, and the subject lists differ in useful ways. Amity has the most classic IT management mix, NMIMS leans hard into security, privacy and risk, and CU adds agentic AI and MLOps. LPU, GLA, MUJ and SMU need a syllabus request. Fees on 3 November 2026 ranged from about ₹1 lakh at GLA to ₹2.33 lakh list at CU.
Pick the track whose subjects you would use in your next role. If you want to build software rather than manage it, look at an MCA instead. Whatever you choose, confirm the UGC-DEB listing and get the fee schedule in writing before you pay.
FAQs
Which universities offer an online MBA in Information Technology in India?
Among the partners we checked on 3 November 2026, Amity University Online, NMIMS, LPU, Chandigarh University and GLA University offer a dedicated IT or IT Management specialization. Manipal University Jaipur offers IT and FinTech and Information System Management tracks, and Sikkim Manipal lists Systems as a dual specialization. UPES and ARKA JAIN offer Digital Business and Data Analytics and AI instead.
Can a non-IT graduate do an online MBA in IT?
Yes. Every university in our comparison accepts a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, and the IT specialization adds no subject requirement on the official pages. Minimum marks vary from 40% at Amity to 50% at NMIMS and UPES. Expect to put in extra work on technical subjects such as data analytics or data engineering if you have no technology background.
Is an MBA in IT better than an MCA?
Neither is better in general; they lead to different work. An MBA in IT trains you to manage technology projects, systems, security and vendors. An MCA trains you to build software, and since a 2022 UGC notification its minimum duration is two years. Choose the MBA for management roles and the MCA if you want to stay technical.
How much does an online MBA in IT management cost?
On 3 November 2026, official pages showed ₹97,000 tuition at GLA, ₹1,96,000 one-time at NMIMS, ₹50,000 per semester at LPU before its grant, ₹2,25,000 at Amity and ₹2,33,500 at CU before its early bird scholarship. Extras such as registration and exam fees are charged separately at most universities.
Does the online MBA in IT involve coding?
Mostly not. Amity and NMIMS focus on project management, systems, business processes, security and AI applications rather than programming. LPU names Data Analytics with Python, and CU includes Data Engineering and MLOps Essentials, which are the most hands-on subjects we found. Ask for the syllabus to see how much practical tool work each subject involves.
