Quick Answer

The online BCA full course runs for three years across six semesters, and the maximum time allowed is six years. Year 1 covers C programming, maths, computer fundamentals and communication. Year 2 adds data structures, databases, operating systems, Java and Python. Year 3 brings electives such as cloud, data science or cyber security, plus a major or capstone project. Total credits differ by university, from 120 to 128 in the syllabi we checked.

Key Highlights

  • The BCA full course online is six semesters over three years at every university we checked, and UGC rules allow up to double that, six years, to finish.
  • Published credit totals differ: Chandigarh University states 120, MUJ states 124, and GLA’s six semester PDFs add up to 128 (our calculation).
  • C is the first language almost everywhere, followed by Java and Python; MUJ also teaches C++ and Kotlin for Android, and GLA teaches Visual Basic and VB.Net.
  • UGC allows online degrees with practicals only where the practical work is limited to programming and coding, including software tools, which is why BCA labs run through virtual coding environments.
  • Every syllabus we read ends with a project in the final year, ranging from a 5-credit major project at GLA to a 12-credit capstone with a live industry project at Chandigarh University.
  • UPES and LPU do not publish complete subject-by-subject lists for all six semesters on their BCA pages, so ask for the scheme in writing before you enrol.

What does the BCA full course cover?

The BCA full course covers programming, the maths behind computing, how computers and networks work, databases, software engineering and, in the final year, a specialisation and a project. It is a three-year undergraduate degree, and the online version follows the same structure as an on-campus BCA at the same university.

Think of it as three layers stacked on top of each other.

The first layer is foundation. You learn to write programs, usually in C, and you study the maths and digital logic that explain why the code behaves the way it does. Most universities also add a communication or English course here, because a developer who cannot write a clear email or document struggles at work.

The second layer is core computing. Data structures, database management, operating systems, computer networks, object-oriented programming and software engineering sit here. These six subjects appear in some form in every official BCA syllabus we read.

The third layer is application. Web development, mobile apps, cloud, machine learning, data analytics or cyber security, depending on the university and the elective track you pick, plus a project where you build something real.

If you are still at the admission stage, our step-by-step guide to online BCA admission covers eligibility, the ABC ID and the DEB-ID. This article picks up from there and tells you what you will actually study once you are in.

How long is the online BCA full course, and how many credits does it carry?

The online BCA is a three-year, six-semester programme at every university we checked, and you can take up to six years to finish. Credit totals are not standard: the official pages we read show 120, 124 and 128.

The time limit comes from the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programmes and Online Programmes) Regulations, 2020. Regulation 13 says the maximum duration for an undergraduate degree in online mode “shall be double the minimum duration” of the programme, as set out in the UGC online programme regulations. For a three-year BCA, that means six years. MUJ’s BCA page says the same thing in plain words: three years and six semesters, which students can complete in a maximum of six years. ARKA JAIN’s Programme Project Report also states a minimum of three years and a maximum of six.

Here is how duration and credits look on the official pages, as checked on 3 November 2026:

UniversityDuration statedTotal credits statedWeekly effort stated
Amity University Online3 years, 6 semestersNot stated on the BCA pageNot stated
Manipal University Jaipur36 months, 6 semesters124 credits15 to 20 hours per week
LPU Online3 years, 6 semestersNot shown in the page text8 to 10 hours per week
Chandigarh University Online3 years, 6 semesters120 minimum, 20 per semesterNot stated
UPES Online3 yearsNot statedNot stated
GLA University Online36 months or 6 semesters128 across the six semester PDFs (our calculation)Not stated
ARKA JAIN University3 years, 6 semestersProgramme Project Report says 132 minimum in its text and 128 in its credit tableNot stated

Why do credits matter to you? Because UGC’s online delivery norms are built on 30 hours of study per credit. On that norm, a 124-credit BCA works out to about 3,720 hours of total study over three years, and a 120-credit BCA to about 3,600 hours (our calculation). That figure includes live sessions, recorded lectures, reading, assignments and self-study, not just classes. Spread across six semesters, it is roughly 600 to 620 hours a semester (our calculation), which is why the weekly effort figures universities quote matter more than they first appear.

The ARKA JAIN mismatch is worth a quick email. Its BCA Programme Project Report states a minimum credit requirement of 132 in the instructional design section, while the credit table at the end of the syllabus shows a total of 128. Ask the university which figure applies to your batch.

BCA 1st year subjects: Semester 1 and Semester 2

In the first year, you learn to program in C (or a general programming course), study foundation maths, understand how a computer works from the hardware up, and build communication skills. By the end of Semester 2, most universities have also introduced databases, operating systems and either data structures or object-oriented programming.

Here is Semester 1 at each university that publishes it:

UniversitySemester 1 subjects on the official syllabus
AmityBasic Mathematics I; Computer and Information Technology; Programming in C; Introduction to Cyber Laws; Business Communication

ARKA JAINCommunicative English; Operating System; Data Structures using C; Relational Database Systems; E-Commerce; plus two labs

What the first year feels like

If you have never coded before, the first semester is the steepest climb. C is not the friendliest first language: you deal with data types, pointers and memory in a way that newer languages hide from you. That is deliberate. Once you understand how C handles memory, Java and Python feel much easier.

The maths is lighter than an engineering degree but real. Expect functions, basic calculus, sets, logic and, at LPU and CU, discrete mathematics, which is the maths of counting, graphs and logic that sits underneath algorithms. If you did not take Maths in Class 12, read the eligibility notes in our admission guide, because UPES requires a bridge course and Amity’s FAQ asks for Maths.

Notice too that several universities mix in non-computing subjects in Year 1: Environmental Science or Studies at MUJ, LPU, GLA and Amity, Finance and Economics at CU, Introduction to Cyber Laws at Amity, and E-Commerce at ARKA JAIN. These are part of the degree requirements, so they carry credits and exams like any other subject.

BCA 2nd year: Semester 3 and Semester 4

The second year is where the BCA becomes a computing degree in full. You meet Java and Python, data structures if you did not already, databases in more depth, networks, software engineering and, at most universities, your first electives.

UniversitySemester 3Semester 4
AmityIntroduction to Data Base Management Systems; Computational Statistics; Network Basics; Object Oriented Programming Using Java; Green ComputingUnix Operating System and Shell Programming; Python Programming; Cyber and Information Security; Fundamental of Cloud Computing and Enterprise; plus titles such as Fundamentals of Digital Marketing, IT Project Management, Introduction to Data Science, AI and Machine Learning and Generative Artificial Intelligence

ARKA JAINPython Programming; Design and Analysis of Algorithms; Software Engineering; Computer Networks; Environmental Science; Python Lab; Algorithms LabWeb Technologies; Java Programming; Advanced Database System; Information Security; Quantitative Techniques; Web Technologies Lab; Java Lab

Amity’s Semester 4 list on its page shows nine titles, more than any other semester, and some of them look like options rather than compulsory subjects. Ask Amity which Semester 4 subjects are core and which you choose.

Why the second year matters most

If someone asks which year of the BCA decides whether you can actually build software, the honest answer is the second. Data structures and algorithms teach you to solve problems efficiently. Databases teach you how almost every business application stores information. Java or Python gives you a language employers use. Software engineering teaches you how teams plan, design and test software rather than just writing code alone.

This is also where elective choices start at MUJ, LPU and CU, so the decisions you make in Semester 3 shape what your final year looks like. Read the next section before you choose.

BCA 3rd year: Semester 5, Semester 6 and the final project

The final year is specialisation and project work. You take advanced or elective subjects in an area such as cloud, data, AI, security or development, and you complete a major project, capstone or term paper.

UniversitySemester 5Semester 6
AmityFundamentals of Ecommerce; Introduction to Artificial Intelligence; Professional Ethics and Social Responsibility; Data Warehousing and Mining; Internet of Things; Introduction to Enterprise Resource PlanningMajor Project; Introduction to e Governance; Blockchain Technologies; Fundamentals of Human Resource Management

Chandigarh UniversityFive electives by specialisation; UI/UX and AR and VR tracks include a Minor Project with a live industry projectTwo electives plus a 12-credit Capstone Project (Specialization-Based) with a live industry project
GLAWeb Technology; Design and Analysis of Algorithms; Programming in Advanced Java; Digital Marketing and Transformation; three labs; Mini Project II; Soft Skills V (21 credits).Net Framework using VB.Net; Introduction to Cloud Computing; VB.Net Lab; Major Project of 5 credits (13 credits)
ARKA JAINBlock Chain Technologies; IT Project Management; Cloud Computing; Mobile Application Development; Personality Development and Leadership Skills; two labsArtificial Intelligence and Machine Learning; Data Analytics; Software Testing; Internet of Things; Project

What the final project involves

Every syllabus we read ends with project work, but the weight and format vary a lot:

  • Chandigarh University gives the Semester 6 capstone 12 credits out of 20, more than half the semester, and describes it as specialisation-based with a live industry project.
  • GLA spreads project work through the course: a Field Project in Semester 2, Mini Project 1 in Semester 4, Mini Project II in Semester 5 and a 5-credit Major Project in Semester 6.
  • MUJ and ARKA JAIN list a Project in Semester 6 without stating its credits on the page.
  • Amity lists a Major Project in Semester 6 and promotes live industry projects separately.
  • LPU lets you choose: a Field Project or extra Generic Elective courses in Semester 5, and a Term Paper or one more elective in Semester 6. Its page also mentions “Provision of Project work and Summer Training for experiential learning.”

The project is the closest thing to work experience many BCA students get, so pick a topic you could show an interviewer. A working application, with code on a public repository and a short write-up, says more than a grade.

Online BCA subjects compared: what is common and what differs

The core of the online BCA is remarkably consistent: programming, data structures, databases, operating systems, networks, computer architecture and software engineering appear at nearly every university. The differences are in the languages taught, the maths load, the non-computing subjects and the final-year electives.

A few patterns stand out.

Chandigarh University’s structure is the most elective-heavy. After two common semesters, Semesters 3 to 6 are filled almost entirely by electives from your chosen track: General, Data Science, Cloud Computing and Cyber Security, Agentic AI, UI/UX (Unity) or AR and VR (Meta). That gives you depth in one area but means two CU BCA graduates can have very different transcripts. If you want the classic all-round BCA, the General track is closest to it.

MUJ keeps a strong common core and runs six elective tracks alongside it from Semester 3: Full Stack Software Development, Agentic AI and Intelligent Systems, Cloud Computing, Data Science and Analytics, Generative AI and Intelligent Application, and Cyber Security. In Semesters 5 and 6, several elective slots say “Choose any one subject” from a short list, so you get some choice inside the track too.

LPU follows a framework of discipline specific electives, skill enhancement courses and generic electives. Its page names the core subjects but not the specific courses inside each elective basket, so ask for the list of options under each code.

GLA is the most lab-heavy on paper, with practicals in every semester and soft skills courses in Semesters 1 to 5. It is also the only syllabus we read that teaches Visual Basic and VB.Net.

Amity and ARKA JAIN publish a single fixed list per semester on the main BCA page. Amity also runs separate specialisation pages, such as Cloud and Security, Data Analytics, Data Science and Software Engineering, which may change some subjects, so check the page for the exact track you join.

Which programming languages and tools does an online BCA teach?

C, Java and Python are the three languages you are most likely to learn in an online BCA, usually in that order. Beyond those, it depends on the university: C++, JavaScript, Kotlin, SQL, Unix shell scripting, PHP, Visual Basic and VB.Net all appear on official pages.

UniversityLanguages and tools named on the official page or syllabus
AmityC, Java, Python, Unix shell programming; the FAQ says Python and Java are the main languages
MUJC, C++, Java (with Swing and an introduction to Spring), Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, Kotlin for Android, Unix shell scripting; Git in one elective
LPUPython, PHP, Linux, Java, SQL and Bootstrap, listed under “Proficiency in Industry Tools and Software”
Chandigarh UniversityPython in several tracks; Cisco, Windows Server, Linux (RHCSA), Azure and AWS in the cloud and security track; Hadoop and Spark in data science; Kali tools and Splunk in cyber security; Unity with C# and Adobe tools in AR and VR
UPESC, Java, Python, Unix and shell programming, and data structures using C, per its own blog on languages taught at UPES
GLAC, Python, Java and Advanced Java, Visual Basic, VB.Net, web technology
ARKA JAINC, Python, Java, web technologies

A practical note: the language list on a syllabus is a starting point, not a ceiling. The best BCA students we speak to pick one language from the course, go deeper on their own, and build two or three projects in it. A syllabus gives you exposure to many tools; employers usually look for depth in one or two.

How do labs and practicals work in an online BCA?

Online BCA labs are coding labs: you write, run and test programs on your own computer or in a browser-based virtual environment provided by the university, and submit the work for assessment. They work online because UGC allows practicals in online mode only when they are limited to programming and coding.

Regulation 3(C)(ii) of the UGC regulations says any programme requiring a practical or laboratory course is prohibited in online mode, “except in cases where practical component is limited to programming and coding including software tools.” That single clause is why a BCA can be offered fully online while degrees with wet labs or workshops cannot. It also explains why online BCA syllabi lean towards software subjects: every lab in the syllabi we read is a programming, database, web, mobile, data or systems lab.

How universities run them, in their own words:

  • MUJ describes “a dedicated virtual programming environment for hands-on practice,” and lists a lab alongside most core programming subjects, such as C Programming Lab, DBMS Lab, Java Lab, Python Lab and Mobile Application Development Lab.
  • Amity’s FAQ says “Virtual labs let you write and test code yourself,” with live classes where an instructor walks you through the work.
  • ARKA JAIN’s Programme Project Report says students perform practicals related to IT tools, programming in C, C++ and Java, and DBMS, and that “Structured Lab manuals will be provided by the University.”
  • GLA lists labs in every semester’s teaching scheme with practical hours per week, for example 4 hours a week for the Programming Lab in Semester 1.
  • CU’s cloud and security track names hands-on platforms such as Windows, Ubuntu Linux, Azure and AWS in its subject titles.

UGC’s e-learning rules back this up. Quadrant I of the four-quadrant model (below) explicitly includes “Virtual Labs” alongside video and simulations.

What you need on your side is simple but non-negotiable: a laptop or desktop you can install software on, a stable internet connection, and the habit of coding a little every week rather than in one long session before an exam. A phone or a locked work laptop will not get you through the labs. MUJ, for instance, says its proctored exams need a Windows desktop or laptop with the latest Chrome, so check device rules before you buy anything new.

How is the online BCA taught? The four-quadrant model

Every UGC-entitled online programme has to follow a four-quadrant approach to e-learning: video lectures, reading material, a discussion forum and assessment. Your BCA classes online will be built around these four parts, plus live sessions.

Annexure VI of the UGC regulations defines the quadrants:

QuadrantWhat it contains, as UGC defines itWhat it means for you
I: e-TutorialVideo and audio content, animation, simulations, video demonstrations, virtual labs, with transcriptsRecorded lectures and coding demos you can replay
II: e-ContentSelf-learning material, e-books, case studies, presentations and web resourcesNotes and readings for each unit
III: Discussion forumRaising doubts and getting them clarified by the course coordinator or teamAsking questions when your code will not compile
IV: AssessmentMCQs, short and long answers, quizzes, assignments and FAQsGraded work through the semester

The same annexure gives delivery norms. A 4-credit course runs over 12 weeks with 12 hours of live online sessions, 24 hours of discussion forum or mentoring, 20 hours of e-tutorial video, 20 hours of e-content and 44 hours of self-study, for 120 hours in total, based on 30 hours per credit. UGC also says a four-credit course “shall typically have 20 hours of video content and 20 hours of reading material.”

That is useful when you compare universities. A university that says 8 to 10 hours a week and one that says 15 to 20 hours a week are describing the same kind of workload in different ways, and your real effort will depend on how quickly you pick up coding. Plan for the higher figure in your first semester.

Assessment follows UGC’s split too: continuous assessment carries at most 30% and the term-end exam at least 70%. ARKA JAIN’s Programme Project Report spells this out as 20% for a midterm and 10% for projects, assignments and activities, with 70% for the term-end exam. If you want a feel for what weekly online study and proctored exams are like, our guide to studying a degree online explains live sessions, the learning platform and exams; it is written for MBA students, but the platform experience is very similar.

What each university publishes, and where it does not

Before you rely on any BCA syllabus, check that it is the official one for your batch. Here is what each university made public when we checked on 3 November 2026.

Amity University Online

Amity’s BCA page lists five or more subjects for each of the six semesters, from Basic Mathematics I and Programming in C in Semester 1 to the Major Project and Blockchain Technologies in Semester 6. It does not state credits. Specialisation versions, such as Cloud and Security or Data Science, have their own pages, so confirm which list applies to your track. See the curriculum on Amity's online BCA page and our Amity University Online profile.

Manipal University Jaipur

MUJ publishes the most detailed curriculum we found: every core subject with a short description, labs listed by semester, six elective tracks with the options inside each, a 124-credit total and an effort estimate of 15 to 20 hours a week. The full list sits on MUJ’s online BCA programme page at onlinemanipal.com. Our Manipal University Jaipur page has more on the university.

LPU Online

LPU’s BCA page names the core courses for all six semesters, but from Semester 3 onwards many slots are labelled only as Discipline Specific Elective, Skill Enhancement Course or Generic Elective, without the actual course titles. It does not show a credit total in the page text. The page lists Python, PHP, Linux, Java, SQL and Bootstrap as industry tools. Ask LPU for the elective baskets before you enrol. See LPU's online BCA page and our LPU Online profile.

Chandigarh University Online

CU states a 120-credit minimum with 20 credits a semester, each subject worth 4 credits, and a 12-credit capstone in Semester 6. Semesters 1 and 2 are common, and Semesters 3 to 6 are filled by your specialisation. The full table is on CU's online BCA page.

UPES Online

UPES does not publish a semester-by-semester subject list on its main BCA page. It lists core modules (Fundamentals of IT and Programming, Data Structures and Algorithms, Web Development, Database Management Systems, Operating Systems, Software Engineering, Cloud Computing, AI and Data Science Basics, and Business Communication) and says electives and projects vary by specialisation: Cloud Computing and Cyber Security, New Age Technology, or Data Analytics. See UPES online BCA. We have not guessed the semester order for UPES; ask for the scheme in writing.

GLA University Online

GLA publishes a separate PDF for each semester with subject codes, lecture, tutorial and practical hours, and credits. For example, the GLA Semester 1 scheme totals 23 credits and the GLA Semester 6 scheme totals 13, including the 5-credit Major Project. Our GLA University profile has more background.

ARKA JAIN University

ARKA JAIN’s BCA page lists subjects and labs for all six semesters. Its separate ARKA JAIN BCA project report shows an older-looking structure with some different subjects, such as Programming with Java in Semester 3, and the credit mismatch mentioned earlier. Ask which version applies to your batch. More on the university is on our ARKA JAIN University page.

Is the BCA you are studying on the UGC-DEB list?

A syllabus only matters if the programme is permitted. On the UGC-DEB 2026-27 entitled list, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, Manipal University Jaipur, Lovely Professional University, Chandigarh University and UPES appear with a BCA.

GLA’s row on the entitled list (row 115) includes the BCA. ARKA JAIN is not on the entitled list, but its BCA is on the 2026-27 recognised list, recognised from the July-August 2025 session to 2029-30 (up to the January 2030 intake), so check that your admission session falls inside that period before you pay. Our guide to checking a UGC approved online programme shows how to read these lists; the method is the same for a BCA.

Under Regulation 22, an online degree from a recognised institution is treated as equivalent to the conventional degree. UGC also requires the mode of delivery to be printed on the back of the degree and mark sheets, which we explain in our guide to what your degree certificate shows.

What does the BCA full course prepare you for?

The BCA full course prepares you for entry-level technical roles in software development, web development, databases, networks, testing, IT support and data, and it is the standard foundation for an MCA. The exact roles you are ready for depend on the electives and project you chose.

The official pages we read name these roles, which we list without salary or placement claims:

  • Amity: Junior Software Developer, System Analyst, Technical Support Engineer, Web Developer, Network Administrator
  • UPES: Software Developer, System Analyst, Cyber Security Analyst, Web Developer, Data Analyst, IT Support Specialist
  • ARKA JAIN: Full Stack Developer, Data Analyst, Web Developer, Software Tester, System Administrator, Database Administrator, Technical Writer
  • MUJ: job profiles in web development, software development, system administration, mobile app development, network administration, quality assurance, technical writing, technical support and system analysis

A simple way to map your electives to these roles:

If your final-year focus isRoles it lines up with
Full stack or web developmentWeb developer, junior software developer
Data science or analyticsData analyst, junior data roles
Cloud and cyber securitySystem administrator, network administrator, security analyst
Testing and qualitySoftware tester, quality assurance
AI or generative AIJunior roles in AI-enabled application teams, often after further study
General trackTechnical support, system analyst, junior developer

Two honest points. First, the degree opens the door, but your projects and portfolio usually decide the first interview. Second, many BCA graduates take a master’s before moving into senior technical roles, which is where the next section comes in.

What is the next course after a BCA?

The most common next course after a BCA is an MCA, which takes the same subjects deeper over two years. UGC’s notification of 3 March 2022 set the MCA minimum at two years, with a bachelor’s degree as entry, as shown in its MCA duration notification.

If you plan to continue online, three of our guides help:

Your DEB-ID stays valid for later online programmes, so the registration step is quicker the second time. And because MUJ, Amity and others teach Python, Java and databases in the BCA, you will meet familiar ground in Year 1 of an MCA.

Not sure which syllabus suits the work you want to do, or whether the elective track you like is on the current UGC-DEB list? Talk to an admission counsellor and we will compare the official subject lists side by side with you before you pay anything.

How GetOnlineDegree.in Helps

We compare online BCA programmes using each university’s own syllabus pages and PDFs rather than brochures or third-party lists. When you speak to us, we can show you where a university’s subject list is complete and where it is not, such as LPU’s elective baskets, UPES’s semester order or ARKA JAIN’s two versions, and suggest the questions to put to the university in writing.

We can also check the current UGC-DEB listing for the BCA you are considering, explain how the elective tracks differ, and walk you through admission once you have chosen. The choice of university and specialisation stays yours.

Conclusion

The BCA full course is a three-year, six-semester degree that moves from C programming and maths in Year 1, through data structures, databases, Java and Python in Year 2, to electives and a project in Year 3. The core is similar everywhere; credits, languages, elective structure and project weight are not.

Read the official syllabus for the exact track and batch you are joining, ask in writing where a university leaves gaps, and pick electives that match the work you want to do. Then plan a little coding every week, because the labs are where an online BCA is won or lost.

FAQs

What subjects are taught in the BCA full course?

The core subjects are programming (usually C first, then Java and Python), mathematics, computer fundamentals and architecture, data structures, database management, operating systems, computer networks and software engineering. In the final year you add electives such as cloud, data science, AI or cyber security, and a major or capstone project. Exact names vary by university.

What are the BCA 1st year subjects?

In the first year you typically study a programming language (C at most universities), foundation maths or discrete mathematics, fundamentals of computers or IT, and English or communication. By Semester 2 you usually start data structures or object-oriented programming, databases and operating systems. Some universities also include environmental science, finance or cyber law in Year 1.

How many credits does an online BCA have?

It depends on the university. Chandigarh University states a minimum of 120 credits, MUJ states 124, and GLA’s six semester schemes add up to 128 (our calculation). ARKA JAIN’s project report shows both 132 and 128 in different places, and Amity, LPU and UPES do not show a total on their BCA pages. Ask the university for the figure.

Can BCA labs really be done online?

Yes, because they are coding labs. UGC rules bar practicals in online mode except where they are limited to programming and coding, including software tools. Universities run them through virtual programming environments or on your own computer with lab manuals and assignments. You need a laptop or desktop you can install software on and a stable connection.

How long does the BCA full course take online?

The online BCA is designed as three years and six semesters. Under UGC’s 2020 regulations, the maximum time allowed for an online undergraduate degree is double the minimum, so you can take up to six years to finish. MUJ and ARKA JAIN both state the six-year maximum on their official pages.
