Quick Answer

An MBA in HR online is a two-year MBA in which the second year focuses on people management: recruitment, compensation, training, performance management, industrial relations and labour laws, organisational development and HR analytics. Amity, NMIMS, LPU, Chandigarh University, UPES, GLA and ARKA JAIN all offer a named HR track online. Fees we checked on 6 November 2026 run from about ₹1 lakh to ₹2.3 lakh.

Key Highlights

  • An MBA in HR online is a full MBA with a Human Resource Management specialization, so the degree name and its two-year minimum are the same as any other MBA; only the second-year electives change.
  • The subject lists differ more than the names suggest: NMIMS and ARKA JAIN name Industrial Relations and Labour Laws as a subject, while Chandigarh University and Amity put the weight on HR analytics, talent acquisition and compensation.
  • India’s four Labour Codes came into effect on 21 November 2025, replacing 29 central labour laws, so ask any university whether its labour law subject now teaches the Codes.
  • Fees on the official pages ranged from ₹97,000 tuition at GLA to a ₹2,33,500 list price at Chandigarh University before its early bird scholarship.
  • The degree builds management capability in HR; it is not a law degree and does not by itself qualify you for roles where a statute or state rule prescribes a specific qualification.

What is an MBA in HR online?

It is a standard two-year Master of Business Administration, studied online, in which you choose Human Resource Management as your specialization. The first year covers the common MBA core, such as accounting, economics, marketing, finance, statistics and organisational behaviour. The HR subjects mostly arrive in semesters three and four.

The specialization does not create a separate degree. Under the UGC Specification of Degrees, the MBA is a master’s degree with a minimum duration of two years. Whether your mark sheet says Human Resource Management, Human Resources or HRM, you still hold an MBA.

Think of the HR track as preparation for managing the people side of an organisation: hiring, paying, developing, evaluating and retaining employees, and keeping the employer on the right side of labour regulation. It is a management programme, so you study policy, process and decision making rather than legal drafting or counselling practice.

Is an online MBA in HR the same as an MBA in HR through distance learning?

No. The UGC’s 2020 regulations treat online and Open and Distance Learning (ODL) as two separate modes. Online programmes are delivered and examined through technology-enabled platforms, while ODL relies on self-learning material with examinations at exam centres. Many people searching for an MBA in HR distance learning option actually want the flexibility of online study. Our comparison of online MBA vs distance MBA explains the practical differences. This article covers online programmes only.

Which universities offer an online MBA in HR?

Seven of the nine partner universities we checked publish a dedicated HR specialization page or list HR as a named specialization of their online MBA. The two Manipal universities market HR options too, but their official pages did not load for our check. We read every official page on 6 November 2026.

What subjects will you study in an online MBA in HR?

Expect five to seven HR subjects in the second year, with one HR foundation subject (usually Human Resource Management or Organisational Behaviour and HRM) in the first year. The shared ground is recruitment, training, performance and compensation. The differences show up in labour law, analytics, organisational development and international HR. Here is what each official page lists.

Amity University Online

Amity publishes the clearest subject list. Human Resource Management itself sits in semester two, alongside Conflict Resolution and Management and Legal Aspects of Business. The HR specialization subjects are:

  • Semester 3: Recruitment Selection and Retention, International Human Resource Management, Compensation and Reward Management, Strategic Human Resource Management, and Measurement in Human Resource.
  • Semester 4: Training and Development, Managerial Counselling, and Leadership and Motivation in Organization.

Semester three also includes Strategic Management, Professional Ethics and Social Responsibility for Sustainability, and a Minor Project. Semester four adds Digital Marketing, AI Tools and Applications, and Management in Action Social Economic and Ethical Issues. The page describes focus areas including Performance Management and HR Analytics, and People Strategy and Organizational Development, but there is no subject called labour law in the HR list; the legal content sits in the semester two core subject Legal Aspects of Business. More about Amity’s programmes is on our Amity University Online profile.

NMIMS

The NMIMS MBA (Human Resources) runs over four semesters. Human Resource Management, Legal Aspect of Business, Business Analytics and Strategic Management are core subjects in semester two. The HR electives the page names are:

  • Compensation and Benefits
  • Industrial Relations and Labour Laws
  • Manpower Planning, Recruitment and Selection
  • Organizational Development and Change
  • Performance Management System
  • Learning and Development
  • Emotional Intelligence

The structure has four elective slots in semester three and three in semester four, alongside Corporate Finance and Research Methodology in semester three, and Corporate Sustainability, Indian Ethos and Ethics, International Business and a six-credit Project in semester four. The page lists seven HR electives for seven slots but does not map each one to a semester, so ask which come first.

NMIMS has the most traditional HR elective list in this comparison: industrial relations, labour law, manpower planning and organisational development, the core of a personnel and IR role in a manufacturing or large services employer. HR analytics is not named as an HR elective; the closest is the common Business Analytics course.

Lovely Professional University

LPU’s HR page does not publish a semester-wise list. It names Training and Development, Industrial Relation and Labour Laws, and Human Resource Metrics and Analytics as skills you learn, followed by “and many more”, and mentions HR research tools and techniques for analysing HR data. It recommends 8 to 10 hours of study a week and runs live and recorded lectures. Ask LPU for the full syllabus before deciding. LPU’s other programmes are on our LPU Online profile.

Chandigarh University

CU publishes a 108-credit structure, including ten short Harvard ManageMentor courses worth 20 credits. People Management is a core subject in semester two. The HRM electives are:

  • Semester 3: Human Resource Analytics, Organisation Change and Development, AI in Talent Acquisition and Workforce Planning, and Compensation Management.
  • Semester 4: Performance Management: Systems and Strategies, and Methodology of Training and Development.

CU’s list is the most analytics-led here, with a full HR analytics subject and an AI-focused talent acquisition subject. Labour law is not named as an HR elective; the semester one core subject Business, Society and Law is the nearest. The page itself notes that Cross-Cultural Management appears in one section as an HRM elective but is not in the official HRM syllabus, so confirm the final list with CU.

UPES

UPES publishes a semester-wise list for its MBA with specialisation in Human Resource Management. Organisational Behaviour and Human Resource Management is in semester two. The specialization subjects are:

  • Semester 3: Cross Cultural and Global HRM, Performance Management, Training and Development, and Organisational Change and Intervention Strategies, listed alongside International Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
  • Semester 4: Digital HR and Compensation Management, with Strategic Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and a Dissertation.

UPES is the only university here with a subject called Digital HR. It does not name a labour law or industrial relations subject in the HR list, so ask how employment regulation is covered.

GLA University

GLA’s HR page describes the programme as covering talent acquisition, employee engagement, labour laws, training and organisational development, and mentions recruitment, leadership development, AI in recruitment, HR analytics, organisational psychology and conflict management as topics. It does not publish a subject-by-subject list. Its general MBA page also says electives are chosen in the “fifth and sixth semesters”, which cannot apply to a four-semester MBA, so ask GLA for the current syllabus and semester plan. GLA’s wider range is on our GLA University profile.

ARKA JAIN University

ARKA JAIN lists Human Resource among seven MBA specializations and publishes subjects for each semester:

  • Semester 1 includes Organizational Behavior and Human Resources Management, and semester 2 includes Business Law and Corporate Governance.
  • Semester 3: Talent Acquisition and Management, Learning and Development, Industrial Relations and Labor Laws, and Employee Management and Negotiation Skills, with Business Research Methods, Operations Management and an open elective.
  • Semester 4: International Human Resource Management, Performance Management Systems, Organization Development and Change Management, and Employee Compensation and Benefits Management, with Strategic Management and a Master Thesis or Project.

That is the broadest HR subject spread in this comparison, with eight HR-focused subjects across the second year. More about the university is on our ARKA JAIN University profile.

“Not named separately” means the official page did not list a subject with that focus; the topic may still be taught inside another subject. LPU, GLA, MUJ and SMU are left out of the table because their official pages do not publish, or did not show us, a full subject list. From LPU’s sample list, it covers labour law, training and HR metrics and analytics.

Why do the Labour Codes matter for an HR curriculum?

Because the law an HR manager works with changed recently. According to the Ministry of Labour press release of 21 November 2025, the Code on Wages, 2019, the Industrial Relations Code, 2020, the Code on Social Security, 2020 and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 were made effective from that date, rationalising 29 existing labour laws.

Subject names such as “Industrial Relations and Labour Laws” have been used for decades, and a subject title alone will not tell you whether the syllabus teaches the old Acts, the new Codes or both. Rules under the Codes are framed by the central and state governments, so the details you apply at work can also vary by state and by the date a rule was notified.

When you shortlist, ask each university three things:

  1. Does the labour law or industrial relations subject teach the four Labour Codes, and when was the syllabus last revised?
  2. Are wage, social security and industrial relations topics covered in separate units, or as one overview?
  3. Does any assignment or project involve applying a Code to a real workplace situation?

If a university’s HR track has no labour law subject at all, that is not automatically a weakness. It may suit someone heading for talent, learning or HR analytics work. It matters more if you expect to handle employee relations, compliance or plant HR.

How much does an online MBA in HR cost?

The HR specialization costs the same as the university’s standard online MBA at the partners we checked, and the range runs from about ₹1 lakh at GLA and ARKA JAIN to over ₹2.3 lakh list price at CU. These figures are from the official pages on 6 November 2026 unless marked otherwise.

UniversityFee shown on the official pageExtras and notes

Sikkim Manipal University₹30,000 per semester; ₹1,20,000 in totalFrom our October 2026 check of SMU’s dual specialization MBA page; confirm for HR

Some of these numbers need working through.

At GLA, ₹97,000 tuition, plus ₹6,000 in exam fees over four semesters, plus ₹2,000 registration comes to ₹1,05,000 (our calculation), which matches the all-inclusive figure on GLA’s MBA page.

At ARKA JAIN, four semesters at ₹25,000 is ₹1,00,000. Adding ₹2,500 registration and two years of exam fees at ₹3,000 gives ₹1,08,500 (our calculation). Ask whether any other charges apply.

At LPU, four semesters at the applicable ₹40,400 is ₹1,61,600, against ₹2,00,000 at the ₹50,000 actual fee (our calculation). The application deadline on the page is 7 November 2026, the day after our check, so the grant may have changed by the time you read this. Confirm whether the grant applies to all four semesters.

At NMIMS, four semesters at ₹55,000 is ₹2,20,000 and two years at ₹1,05,000 is ₹2,10,000, against ₹1,96,000 paid at once (our calculation). Exam fees come on top. The structure shows 24 subjects across four semesters plus a project, so if every subject is examined once, exam fees would add ₹19,200 plus ₹800 for the project (our calculation, assuming no repeat attempts). NMIMS states that fees may change.

At CU, four payments of ₹43,781 add up to ₹1,75,124, which matches the ₹1,75,125 scholarship price after rounding (our calculation). Because the page shows no end date for the scholarship, treat it as a snapshot and ask for the price in writing.

At Amity, paying once at ₹2,07,000 instead of per semester saves ₹18,000 against the ₹2,25,000 effective per-semester total (our calculation).

Who should choose an MBA in HR online?

It suits three groups best: people already working in HR who want to move up, team leads and managers who handle people decisions without the HR title, and career switchers with a clear route into an HR function. It suits a fresher with no HR exposure less well, though it is not closed to them.

HR executives and generalists

If you already work as an HR executive, recruiter, payroll or HR operations associate, the degree gives you the structure behind the tasks you do: why compensation is designed the way it is, how performance systems are built, how industrial relations work and how HR decisions tie to business strategy. Look for a curriculum that fills your gaps. A recruiter wanting to move into an HR business partner role may need compensation, OD and analytics more than another recruitment subject.

Team leads and line managers

Many team leads in IT services, sales, operations and retail spend much of their time hiring, coaching, appraising and handling conflict. An HR specialization can help even if you never join an HR department. Amity lists people managers and team leaders among its target candidates. If you want to stay in your function but manage people better, compare the HR track with a general MBA or with the specialization closest to your function.

Career switchers

Switching into HR from another field is common, but the degree alone rarely makes the move. A realistic plan combines the MBA with an internal transfer, an HR project at your current employer, or entry-level HR work. Choose a university whose project or dissertation can be based on a real HR problem: Amity lists a Minor Project, NMIMS a six-credit Project, UPES a Dissertation and ARKA JAIN a Master Thesis or Project.

Do you need work experience?

Not at most universities we checked. Amity, NMIMS, CU, GLA, LPU and ARKA JAIN ask for a bachelor’s degree with their stated minimum marks, and CU’s FAQ says work experience helps but is not required. UPES uses experience only as a relaxation: 50% at graduation, or 45% with at least two years of work experience. Most learners are already employed, and our guide to the online MBA for working professionals covers planning study around a full-time job.

MBA in HR vs MBA in Operations vs General MBA: which should you choose?

Choose HR if your next role is about people: hiring, rewards, development, employee relations and policy. Choose Operations if your work is about processes, supply chains, quality and capacity. Choose a General MBA if you want breadth, are unsure of your direction, or need a little of everything as a business owner or general manager.

If processes interest you as much as people, read our guide to the online MBA operations management track. If you manage projects and teams in delivery roles, an online MBA in project management is the other natural comparison. Where a university offers dual specializations, HR paired with operations, marketing or finance is a common way to keep options open.

What about HR analytics as its own track?

Among the partners we checked, HR analytics sits inside the HR specialization rather than as a separate MBA: CU has a Human Resource Analytics subject, Amity has Measurement in Human Resource, LPU names Human Resource Metrics and Analytics, and UPES has Digital HR. If your interest leans heavily towards data, compare CU’s semester three HR electives with a business analytics specialization at the same university before choosing.

What does the degree substitute for, and what does it not?

An online MBA in HR can stand in for a general management qualification in HR roles that ask for a postgraduate degree or an MBA, provided the university is listed by the UGC-DEB for your session. It does not replace a law degree, professional legal advice, or any qualification that a specific statute or state rule prescribes for a particular post.

Here is how we would frame it.

It can supportIt does not replace
Applications to HR roles that ask for an MBA or postgraduate degreeA law degree such as an LLB, or enrolment as an advocate
Moving from HR operations into HR business partner, talent or L&D rolesLegal opinion on how a Labour Code or state rule applies to an employer
A grounding in labour law concepts for policy and employee relations workA qualification that a statute or state rule names for a specific position; check the current rule for your state and role
Higher study where a master’s degree is the entry requirementProfessional HR certifications if a particular employer asks for them

Labour-law compliance work in India depends on central Codes, state rules and the type of establishment, so the qualification asked for depends on the employer and the post. We have not listed any post as requiring or excluding this degree, because that varies by law and by state, and we only state what we can confirm from an official source. If you are aiming at a compliance-facing post, read the recruitment notice or the governing rule itself before you enrol.

The broader question of whether an online MBA is accepted for jobs, government exams and higher study is covered in our guide on whether an online MBA is valid.

What roles does an online MBA in HR prepare you for?

It prepares you for HR roles across recruitment, generalist HR, learning and development, compensation, employee relations, HR operations and organisational development. We do not quote salary or placement figures, because no official dataset covers online MBA graduates in this specialization.

The universities themselves list these roles on their HR pages:

  • Amity: HR Executive, Talent Acquisition Executive, HR Operations Executive and Learning and Development Associate at entry level; HR Business Partner, Talent Acquisition Manager, Learning and Development Manager and Employee Engagement Manager at mid level; and HR Director, Head of Talent, Chief Human Resources Officer and People and Culture Leader at the advanced level.
  • NMIMS: Human Resources Manager, Talent Acquisition Specialist and Performance Management Specialist.
  • UPES: HR Assistant, HR Analyst, HR Coordinator and Recruitment Coordinator at entry level; HR Business Partner, HR Manager, Talent Acquisition Manager and Employee Relations Manager at mid level.
  • CU: HR Executive, Talent Acquisition Specialist, HR Generalist, Learning and Development Executive, Compensation and Benefits Analyst, HR Manager and Organizational Development Specialist.
  • GLA: HR Manager, Talent Acquisition Manager, Training and Development Manager, Employee Relations Manager, HR Operations Manager and Compensation and Benefits Analyst, with senior roles such as Head of HR and CHRO described as coming with experience.

Read the senior titles as long-term directions rather than outcomes of the degree. What you move into depends on your experience, your employer and the work you do alongside the programme.

Is an MBA in HR online valid in India?

Yes, if the university is permitted to offer its online MBA for your admission session. The specialization does not affect validity; the university’s UGC-DEB listing does. Regulation 22 of the UGC online regulations treats degrees earned through online mode from recognised institutions as equivalent to conventional degrees.

On the 2026-27 entitled list, Amity University Uttar Pradesh, MUJ, SMU, LPU, CU, NMIMS and UPES appear with an MBA, and GLA University’s row (row 115) also includes an MBA. ARKA JAIN appears on the 2026-27 recognised list for MBA (General), so ask how the HR specialization will be shown on your mark sheets.

Two more checks matter. Every online learner needs a DEB-ID, created through the UGC-DEB student portal with your ABC ID. And under Regulation 16(2), the mode of delivery must be printed on the degree and mark sheets, so expect “online” to appear on them. Our guide to checking a UGC approved online MBA shows how to read the lists step by step.

How should you judge an HR curriculum before enrolling?

Score the second-year HR subjects against the work you want to do, then ask for what the public page leaves out. A balanced HR curriculum for most learners covers six areas: talent acquisition, compensation, training and performance, labour law and industrial relations, organisational development, and HR analytics.

A practical way to compare:

  1. Write down the semester three and four HR subjects for each university on your shortlist.
  2. Mark which of the six areas each subject covers, and note any gaps.
  3. Ask whether the labour law content teaches the four Labour Codes and when the syllabus was revised.
  4. Ask whether the project or dissertation can be based on a real HR problem at your workplace.
  5. Ask how HR analytics is taught: with spreadsheets and HR datasets, or as theory only.
  6. Check how exams run. Under the UGC regulations, online exams are technology-enabled or proctored, so confirm the device and internet set-up expected.

On published detail alone, ARKA JAIN and NMIMS give the most complete traditional HR spread including labour law, CU the most analytics-led list, Amity a balanced talent and rewards mix, and UPES the only Digital HR subject. LPU, GLA, MUJ and SMU need a syllabus request before you can judge them fairly.

What should you check before paying any fee?

Check the listing, the syllabus and the money, in that order.

  1. UGC-DEB status. Find the university’s row on the current entitled or recognised list for the session you are joining.
  2. Exact specialization name. Ask how it will appear on your mark sheets: Human Resource Management, Human Resources and HRM are all in use.
  3. Full syllabus. Especially at LPU, GLA, MUJ and SMU, where we could not see a full subject list.
  4. Labour law coverage. Ask whether the subject teaches the Labour Codes in force since 21 November 2025.
  5. Total cost in writing. Including registration, exam, project and other fees, and whether a grant or scholarship applies to all four semesters.
  6. Offer dates. LPU’s page showed a 7 November 2026 application deadline and CU’s early bird scholarship showed no end date when we checked. Treat both as a snapshot.

The admission steps themselves, from documents to DEB-ID, are covered in our guide to online MBA admission.

Not sure which HR track fits you? Share your graduation marks, your current role and the HR work you want to do next, and an admission advisor can help you shortlist universities whose HR subjects match that goal and request their current written fee schedules and syllabi.

How GetOnlineDegree.in Helps

We compare online programmes from UGC-DEB listed partner universities using their official pages, so you can see HR subject lists, fees and eligibility side by side instead of piecing them together from marketing material. For an HR specialization, we can help you see which universities name labour law, analytics or OD subjects, request the syllabus where it is not published, and confirm the DEB listing for your session. The decision is yours; our job is to make sure it rests on official information.

Conclusion

An MBA in HR online is a standard two-year MBA with a people-management second year. Seven partner universities publish a named HR track, and their subject lists differ in ways that matter. NMIMS and ARKA JAIN keep industrial relations and labour law at the centre, CU leads on HR analytics and AI in talent acquisition, Amity balances talent, rewards and measurement, and UPES adds Digital HR. Fees on 6 November 2026 ranged from about ₹1 lakh at GLA and ARKA JAIN to ₹2.33 lakh list at CU.

Pick the track whose subjects you would use in your next role, ask whether the labour law content reflects the four Labour Codes, and remember what the degree does not replace. Confirm the UGC-DEB listing and get the full fee schedule in writing before you pay.

FAQs

Which universities offer an MBA in HR online in India?

Among the partners we checked on 6 November 2026, Amity University Online, NMIMS, LPU, Chandigarh University, UPES, GLA University and ARKA JAIN University publish a named HR specialization for their online MBA. Manipal University Jaipur and Sikkim Manipal University also market HR options, but their pages did not load for our check, so ask them directly for the current HR syllabus and fees.

What are the main subjects in an online MBA in HR?

The common subjects are recruitment and talent acquisition, compensation and benefits, training and development, performance management and organisational development. NMIMS, ARKA JAIN and LPU also name industrial relations and labour laws, while CU, Amity, LPU and UPES include an HR analytics, measurement or Digital HR subject. The full list varies by university, so compare semester three and four subjects.

Can I do an online MBA in HR without HR experience?

Yes. None of the universities we checked makes work experience compulsory for the HR track. They ask for a bachelor’s degree with minimum marks between 40% and 50%, and UPES lowers its requirement to 45% for candidates with two years of experience. Career switchers should plan an HR project or internal move alongside the degree.

How much does an online MBA in HR cost?

On 6 November 2026, official pages showed ₹97,000 tuition at GLA, ₹25,000 per semester at ARKA JAIN, ₹40,400 per semester at LPU after its grant, ₹1,96,000 one-time at NMIMS, ₹2,25,000 at Amity and ₹2,33,500 at CU before its early bird scholarship. Registration and exam fees are usually extra.

Is an online MBA in HR enough for labour law compliance roles?

It gives you a grounding in labour law concepts if your syllabus includes them, but it is not a law degree. Some compliance-facing posts may have qualifications set by a statute, a state rule or the employer, so read the rule or recruitment notice for the specific post. Also ask whether the course teaches the four Labour Codes in force since 21 November 2025.
