Quick Answer
No, not as a degree MBA from the Indian universities we checked. All eight ask for a completed bachelor’s degree, usually with 40% to 50% marks. There are narrow exceptions. ARKA JAIN lets final-semester students apply, and UPES lists CA, CS and ICWA holders as eligible. If you have no degree yet, the realistic route is an online bachelor’s first, then the MBA.
Key Highlights
- Every online MBA we checked at eight UGC-DEB listed universities requires a bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university.
- Minimum marks range from 40% (Amity) to 50% (Manipal, NMIMS, UPES, ARKA JAIN), with 45% for reserved categories at several universities.
- ARKA JAIN University says final-semester bachelor’s students may apply. The other universities’ pages do not say either way, so ask before you assume.
- UPES lists “CA, CS or ICWA” holders as eligible to apply, as an alternative line under its degree requirement. Confirm your case with UPES in writing.
- With only 10+2 or a diploma, start with an online BBA, BCom or BA from a listed university, then move to the MBA.
- “MBA without a degree” offers online usually come from foreign institutions or are certificates, not Indian MBA degrees. Check exactly what award you will receive.
Introduction
If you searched “MBA without a bachelor’s degree”, you probably fall into one of three groups. You are in the final year of college and want to line up your MBA early. You left graduation midway, or never started it, and now have years of work experience. Or you hold a diploma or a professional qualification like CA and want to know whether it counts.
Each of these situations has a different answer, and most pages on this topic blur them together. Many results come from American universities, where a few programmes do consider experience instead of a degree. That logic rarely carries over to Indian online MBAs.
This guide sticks to what Indian universities actually publish. We read the official eligibility sections of eight online MBA programmes on 21 October 2026. You will see exactly where the line is drawn, which exceptions exist on paper, and what to do if you do not have a degree today. We also cover the offers that promise an MBA without graduation, and how to tell whether they are worth anything in India.
Can you get an MBA without a bachelor’s degree in India?
For a degree MBA from an Indian university, generally no. Every one of the eight online MBAs we checked asks for a completed bachelor’s degree. The only routes around this are narrow, specific to one university, and need written confirmation before you pay anything.
An MBA is a postgraduate degree. It builds on undergraduate study, and Indian universities treat a recognised bachelor’s degree as the starting point. The UGC’s online programme rules do not fix one national eligibility standard for every course. Under Regulation 14 of the UGC 2020 online regulations, the prospectus must state the minimum qualifications set by the Commission or a relevant statutory body. Where no such standard exists, the university sets its own. That is why the details differ from one university to the next, even though they all start from a degree.
So the honest framing is this. You are not asking whether India allows an MBA without graduation. You are asking whether a specific university’s published eligibility includes your situation. The table in the next section answers that for eight universities.
Why do so many search results say it is possible?
Search results for this question mix countries. Some business schools in the United States and Europe admit candidates without an undergraduate degree if they have long managerial experience. Those pages rank well, and blogs then repeat the idea as if it applied everywhere.
For a student in India, the questions that matter are different. Is the degree from a university on the UGC-DEB list for your session? If it is a foreign degree, will it be accepted for your purpose in India? An MBA without a degree from abroad may fail both tests, and we cover that further down.
Online MBA eligibility at eight universities: what the official pages say
Here is the eligibility each university publishes for its online MBA, checked on 21 October 2026. The university names link to the official programme pages, so you can read the exact wording yourself.
| University | Qualification required | Minimum marks | Final-year students | Alternative routes stated |
| Amity online MBA | Graduation in any discipline | 40%; below 40% needs an admission test | Not stated | None stated |
| MUJ online MBA (onlinemanipal.com) | 10+2+3 year bachelor’s degree from a recognised university | 50% (45% reserved categories) | Not stated | None stated |
| SMU online MBA (onlinemanipal.com) | 10+2+3, 10+2+4 or 10+3+3 year bachelor’s degree in any discipline, or an AIU-recognised equivalent | 50% (45% reserved categories) | Not stated | AIU-recognised equivalent qualification |
| NMIMS online MBA | Bachelor’s degree (10+2+3) in any discipline, or an AIU-recognised equivalent degree | 50% (45% SC/ST/OBC/PwD) | Not stated | AIU-recognised equivalent degree |
| UPES online MBA | Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline | 50%, or 45% with at least 2 years of work experience | Not stated | Online or ODL graduates from UGC-DEB recognised institutions; CA, CS or ICWA holders |
| ARKA JAIN online MBA | Passed bachelor’s degree of minimum 3 years’ duration | 50% (45% reserved category) | Final-semester students may apply | None stated |
| CU online MBA | Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognised university | Not stated | Not stated | Graduates of recognised professional programmes like CA or ICWA |
| LPU online MBA | Graduation in any discipline or equivalent | Not stated on the page we checked | Not stated | None stated |
Two things stand out. First, every row starts with a degree. Second, “not stated” appears a lot. That does not mean “not allowed”, but it does mean you need a written answer from the admissions team before you plan around it.
The universities differ in their marks thresholds too. If your graduation percentage is close to a cut-off, our online MBA programmes page lets you compare the options side by side.
What counts as a “bachelor’s degree” for online MBA admission?
Any recognised bachelor’s degree in any discipline works at all eight universities. You do not need a BBA or BCom. A BA, BSc, BTech, BCA or any other recognised degree is acceptable, as long as it meets the duration and marks rules.
The finer points are where people get caught.
Does a 3-year degree work, or do you need 4 years?
A 3-year degree is enough everywhere we checked. Manipal University Jaipur and NMIMS describe the requirement as a 10+2+3 bachelor’s degree. ARKA JAIN asks for a bachelor’s of at least three years. Sikkim Manipal University spells out three accepted patterns: 10+2+3, 10+2+4 and 10+3+3. So a 4-year degree is also accepted there.
Does a diploma followed by a degree count?
At Sikkim Manipal University, yes, if you finished a 10+3 diploma and then a 3-year degree. That is the 10+3+3 pattern on its eligibility list. The degree is still the qualifying part. The diploma is simply the route you took to reach it. At other universities, ask whether this pattern is accepted. Most pages describe the requirement in terms of the degree, not the path before it.
Is an online or distance degree accepted?
UPES states this most clearly. Graduates who completed their degree in online or open and distance learning mode are eligible, provided the institution is recognised by the UGC-DEB. Other universities ask for a degree from a “recognised university” without separating modes. Under Regulation 22 of the UGC’s 2020 regulations, online and ODL degrees from recognised institutions are treated as equivalent to regular degrees. In practice, keep proof that your university was listed for your session in case admissions asks.
What about a degree from outside India?
Several universities ask for an equivalence certificate. Amity Online lists a certificate of equivalence from the Association of Indian Universities for foreign students. Manipal asks students with a 10+2 or graduation from outside India for an AIU equivalence certificate. SMU and NMIMS accept an AIU-recognised equivalent. If your degree is foreign, start the AIU process early. It is often the slowest document to arrange.
Can final-year students apply for an online MBA?
At ARKA JAIN University, yes. Its MBA page says candidates in the final semester of their bachelor’s programme are also eligible to apply. The other seven official pages we checked did not say either way on 21 October 2026.
“Not stated” is not a refusal. It means you should ask before you plan your year around a start date. When you contact admissions as a final-year student, ask four things in writing:
1. Can I apply before my final results are declared?
2. Is admission provisional until I submit my final marksheet?
3. What is the last date to submit the marksheet or provisional degree certificate?
4. What happens to the fee I paid if my final marks fall below the cut-off?
The fourth question matters most. A provisional seat is only useful if you meet the marks threshold when results come out. If you are close to the line, find out the refund position before you pay.
Also check the session timing. Online MBAs usually admit students in fixed cycles. If your results come out after a session’s deadline, you may need to join the next intake. That is not a problem, as long as you know in advance.
What if your graduation marks are below the cut-off?
You may still have options, depending on how far below you are. Amity’s online MBA asks for 40% and states that applicants below 40% need an admission test. UPES accepts 45% instead of 50% if you have at least two years of work experience. Reserved-category candidates get a lower threshold at several universities.
Here is how the thresholds compare for a general-category applicant:
| Your graduation aggregate | Universities whose published threshold you meet |
| 50% or above | All eight |
| 45% to 49% with 2+ years’ work experience | Amity, UPES; CU and LPU do not state a minimum |
| 40% to 49% without work experience | Amity; CU and LPU do not state a minimum |
| Below 40% | Amity, through its admission test; CU and LPU do not state a minimum |
Where a page says “not stated”, do not read that as “no minimum”. Chandigarh University’s and LPU’s pages did not publish a percentage when we checked, but admissions may still apply one. Ask before applying.
For reserved categories, Manipal University Jaipur, Sikkim Manipal University and NMIMS state 45%. ARKA JAIN’s eligibility section says 45% for reserved category candidates, while its FAQ describes a 5% relaxation for SC/ST candidates. Confirm which rule applies to you.
One more thing on marks. Pages like Manipal’s and SMU’s refer to aggregate marks in graduation, so check whether a university means your whole degree or a particular year. If your university awarded a CGPA, check whether the admissions team wants your university’s official percentage conversion.
Is there a route for CA, CS or ICWA holders?
At UPES, the official page lists one. Beneath the bachelor’s degree requirement, after an “OR”, it states that candidates who have completed professional qualifications “viz. CA, CS or ICWA are eligible to apply”. This is the closest thing to a published non-degree route that we found among the eight universities.
Read it carefully, though. The sentence says these candidates are eligible to apply. It does not set out how the qualification is assessed, or whether any other condition applies. If you hold a CA, CS or ICWA qualification without a separate bachelor’s degree, email UPES admissions. Quote that line and ask them to confirm in writing that you can be admitted on that basis.
Chandigarh University’s page also mentions professional qualifications, but differently. It says “graduates of recognized professional programs like CA/ICWA etc. are also eligible to apply”. The word “graduates” matters here. Do not assume this covers you without a degree until CU confirms it.
The other six universities did not mention professional qualifications on the pages we checked.
What about diploma holders?
A diploma on its own does not meet the eligibility for any of the eight online MBAs we checked. Each one asks for a bachelor’s degree. A diploma can still be a stepping stone, though.
If you completed a 10+3 diploma, you may be able to start an online bachelor’s degree with it. The Online Manipal online BBA eligibility page says Manipal University Jaipur accepts 10+2 or a 10+3 diploma from a recognised national or state board or institute. Sikkim Manipal University lists the same requirement there. Once you complete the bachelor’s degree, you reach the starting line for an MBA.
For Sikkim Manipal University’s MBA in particular, the 10+3+3 pattern on its eligibility list shows that a diploma followed by a degree is an accepted path.
What are your options if you do not have a degree at all?
The most reliable path is an online bachelor’s degree first, then the online MBA. It takes longer than any shortcut, but it gives you two recognised degrees, and nothing has to be explained away later.
Route 1: online BBA, then online MBA
An online BBA is a 3-year undergraduate degree for students who have passed 10+2. ARKA JAIN University’s online BBA page asks for a pass in 10+2 from a recognised board and runs over six semesters. Manipal’s online BBA accepts 10+2 or a 10+3 diploma. A BBA also gives you a business foundation, which helps if you plan an MBA.
Most universities on our list have the BBA on the UGC-DEB lists for 2026-27. Amity, MUJ, SMU, LPU, Chandigarh University, NMIMS, UPES and GLA show it on the 2026-27 entitled universities list, and ARKA JAIN shows it on the 2026-27 recognised universities list. For any other university, check the list for your session before applying.
You can compare options on our online BBA programmes page.
Route 2: online BCom or BA, then online MBA
Any discipline qualifies for the MBA, so you do not have to choose a business degree first. If commerce suits your work, an online BCom works. If you prefer humanities, an online BA works. Choose the degree you are most likely to finish with good marks. Your graduation percentage will matter when you apply for the MBA.
Route 3: finish the degree you left halfway
If you dropped out of a regular degree, ask your original university about re-admission or completing the remaining papers before you start over. Some universities have rules for this, and others do not. Finishing an existing degree can take far less time than starting fresh.
How long does the degree-first route take?
A typical online bachelor’s runs three years. The online MBAs we checked run two years. So from 10+2 to MBA, plan on about five years of study. That sounds long, but it is study you can do while working. The two degrees also stand on their own if your plans change halfway.
Short courses and certificates: what they are and what they are not
You will find many management certificates and short executive programmes that do not ask for a degree. Some are genuinely useful for skills. The problem starts when they are sold as an “MBA”.
Before you pay, ask one question: what exact award will I receive, and which institution will issue it? A certificate in management is not an MBA degree, even if the brochure uses the word MBA in large letters. The UGC’s online degree durations are tied to its 2014 Specification of Degrees under Regulation 13 of the 2020 rules. Every online MBA degree we checked runs for two years.
None of this makes a certificate worthless. If your goal is a skill, such as finance basics or people management, a short course may be the right choice. Just do not buy one expecting it to work like an MBA degree on a job application.
“MBA without a degree” offers: red flags to watch for
If someone offers you an MBA without graduation, slow down and check these points:
| What you are told | What to check |
| “No degree needed, just experience” | Who awards the degree? If it is a foreign institution, is the award usable for your purpose in India? |
| “UGC approved” | Is the awarding university on the UGC-DEB list for your session, and is the MBA listed against it? |
| “Partnered with a top foreign university” | The UGC has publicly warned about ed-tech arrangements offering online degrees with foreign institutions that lack UGC recognition |
| “Get your MBA in 6 or 12 months” | What exactly is the award: a degree, a diploma or a certificate? |
| “Admission confirmed, pay today” | Is there a published eligibility section and a written fee schedule? |
The UGC’s public notice on admission precautions, dated 19 March 2024, asks students to check the DEB portal and the institution’s disclosures before taking admission in ODL or online programmes. That check takes a few minutes and protects years of effort.
Does work experience replace a bachelor’s degree?
Not at any of the eight universities we checked. Work experience can help in two specific ways, but it does not stand in for the degree.
At UPES, two years of work experience lowers the marks threshold from 50% to 45%. You still need the bachelor’s degree. At NMIMS, the MBA (Working Executive) requires both a degree with 55% (50% for reserved categories) and at least three years of work experience. Experience is an extra requirement there, not a substitute.
If you have ten years of work experience but no degree, that is frustrating. Your experience is real, and it will make your MBA far more useful when you get there. It just does not open the door to an Indian degree MBA on its own. The bachelor’s degree route is the one that does.
How to check your own eligibility before you apply
Use this short process before you fill any application form:
1. Gather your documents: 10th and 12th marksheets, all graduation marksheets, and your degree or provisional certificate.
2. Work out your graduation aggregate exactly as your university reports it, and note any CGPA conversion rule.
3. Read the eligibility section on the official programme page, not on a third-party listing.
4. Check whether the university and programme appear on the UGC-DEB list for your admission session.
5. If your case is unusual (final year, diploma path, foreign degree, CA/CS/ICWA, marks near the cut-off), email admissions and keep the reply.
6. Ask for a written fee schedule and refund terms before paying anything.
Universities ask for different documents at the admission stage. NMIMS, for example, asks for attested copies of academic documents, photo identity and a photograph. Keep scans ready to avoid delays.
If you are unsure where you stand, an admission advisor can go through your marksheets with you and tell you which programmes you meet the published criteria for, before you spend anything on applications.
How GetOnlineDegree.in Helps
We compare online programmes from universities on the UGC-DEB lists, using the eligibility and fee details each university publishes. If you are a final-year student, we help you find out which universities accept applications before results. If you have no degree yet, we help you choose an online bachelor’s programme that leads cleanly into an MBA later.
You can browse our partner universities and their programmes. Every eligibility rule we mention can be checked on the university’s own site, and we encourage you to do that. The decision stays yours, and admission always rests with the university.
Conclusion
An online MBA in India starts with a bachelor’s degree. All eight universities we checked say so, with thresholds from 40% to 50% and lower cut-offs for reserved categories at several of them. The exceptions are narrow and specific. ARKA JAIN accepts applications from final-semester students. UPES lists CA, CS and ICWA holders as eligible to apply. Both need written confirmation for your individual case.
If you do not have a degree, the most dependable path is an online BBA, BCom or BA from a UGC-DEB listed university, followed by the MBA. It takes longer than any shortcut on offer, but both degrees will hold up wherever you use them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do an MBA without graduation in India?
Not a degree MBA from the eight universities we checked. All of them require a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. ARKA JAIN University allows final-semester students to apply. UPES lists CA, CS or ICWA holders as eligible to apply. Confirm your case in writing. Without a degree, start with an online bachelor’s programme.
Can I apply for an online MBA in my final year of graduation?
ARKA JAIN University’s MBA page says final-semester students can apply. The other universities we checked did not state a rule on their pages. Ask admissions whether you can apply before results, whether admission is provisional, when you must submit your final marksheet, and what happens to your fee if your marks fall short.
Is a diploma enough for an online MBA?
No. None of the eight online MBAs accepts a diploma alone. A diploma can lead to a degree, though. Manipal’s online BBA accepts a 10+3 diploma, and Sikkim Manipal University’s MBA eligibility includes the 10+3+3 pattern, which is a diploma followed by a 3-year degree.
Can work experience replace a bachelor’s degree for an MBA?
Not at the universities we checked. At UPES, two years of experience lowers the marks requirement from 50% to 45%, but you still need a degree. The NMIMS MBA for working executives requires both a degree and at least three years of experience.
Are online MBAs without a degree from foreign universities valid in India?
Be careful. The UGC has warned about ed-tech arrangements offering online degrees with foreign institutions that are not UGC recognised. Universities such as Amity and Manipal ask for an AIU equivalence certificate for foreign qualifications. Before paying, confirm who awards the degree and whether it will be accepted for your purpose.
